2 Today we will… Identify the aims of the League of Nations Assess the success of the League of Nations

3 One of Woodrow Wilson’s aims was to start a ‘League of Nations’ which would prevent any more wars The aims of the league were written down at the Paris Peace Conference This was called the League Covenant

4 Aims of the League of Nations 1.To sort out arguments between the countries involved 2.To get countries to disarm (reduce army and weapons) 3.To prevent future wars 4.To improve peoples’ lives and jobs 5.To enforce The Treaty of Versailles

5 Task One 1.Copy the mind map bubble ‘Aims of the League of Nations’ and add the aims around the bubble 2.Once you have done this, tick off each one you fully understand 3.Your teacher will go over any difficult ones Aims of the League of Nations

6 Woodrow Wilson in 1919 ‘ I can predict with absolute certainty that within another generation there will be another world war if the nations of the world do not work together to prevent it’

7 The League of Nations was very complicated and had lots of different parts By 1925, there were 55 different countries in it! Do you think the League of Nations would work? Discuss your answer with your partner.

8 Countries who did not join USA – Did not want to join – wanted to stay out of European affairs Germany – were not allowed – they had started the war and were ‘too dangerous’ Russia – not allowed – Communist country

10 League of Nations ‘The League of Nations was heavily criticised, although it did have some strengths’ Task Three 1.You will have a sheet containing both strengths and weaknesses of the League of Nations 2.With a partner, discuss these statements and divide them into two groups ‘Strengths’ and ‘Weaknesses’

11 Task Four 1.Copy the table below in your jotter 2.Once you have discussed the statements as a class and are sure which column each belongs to, stick them in to the appropriate column 3.Those statements marked with a (*) require further reading – pages 92- 93 of textbook Successes of the League Failures of the League

13 Task Five Other important treaties were secured during the 1930s. Use page 94 of the textbook to write up summaries of The Locarno Treaties The Kellogg Briand Pact Both of these have featured in past papers.
