1 BRAVE NEW WORLD BY ALDOUS HUXLEY

2 ACTIVITY #1 – WRITTEN RESPONSE In a well thought out 3 paragraph response discuss the following prompt fully. Be sure to respond to each part of the prompt: How and why is Bernard different? Also consider whether he really is different. Look at his behavior when he returns from the Savage Reservation with John. Does he not take advantage of all those things that he has missed out on before and are not his motives and actions those of the rest of the members of Brave New World? Why is it important to conform? Why is it important to be different? Give examples where each is beneficial.

3 CHARACTERIZATION There are two types of literary characters—round, also called dynamic, and flat, also called static. Round characters change, adjust to circumstances, and grow as people. Flat characters, on the other hand, remain the same from the beginning to the end of a literary work. In literature, a character’s personality traits are revealed in various ways. Authors use four techniques for characterization: 1. Speech and thought—what the character says and thinks 2. Action—what the character does 3. Reputation—what other characters say about the character 4. Authorial voice—what the author uses the narrator to say about the character; includes the physical description of the character and the character’s past

4 ACTIVITY #2 - CHARACTERIZATION In your table groups, select one character from Brave New World. Based on information from the novel, identify the traits of that character. In a paragraph (on your own paper) indicate which of the four techniques of characterization are used to reveal the information. Find a passage or quote from the book that represents which technique Huxley uses, explain how the passage demonstrates that technique in your paragraph. 1. Speech and thought—what the character says and thinks 2. Action—what the character does 3. Reputation—what other characters say about the character 4. Authorial voice—what the author uses the narrator to say about the character; includes the physical description of the character and the character’s past
