7 Current IT Infrastructure  Windows 7 Enterprise deployed on over 31,000 netbooks and laptops – 1:1 computing model with a uniform vision  Terminal Services (nearly 12K terminals deployed in K- 5 classrooms, grade 3 received 27 netbooks)  Group Policy Management (extensively)  Windows Server 2008  Office 2007  MDOP (PoC started in May 2010)  Exchange 2003 will update to 2010 this year 7

8 Technology Cost-effectively support the 1:1 initiative  Netbook PCs for every student  Tablet PCs for every instructor Key technologies deployed for this initiative:  Windows 7 Enterprise & Internet Explorer 8  Microsoft Office Standard 2007 for students, Microsoft Office Professional 2007 for teachers  Remote Desktop Services (RDS) in Windows Server 2008 R2 to publish applications 8

9 Improved System Performance & Reliability Faster log-on: from >6 minutes to less than 21 seconds Better use experience for students & teachers 9

10 Simplified, Cost Effective IT  Deployed 34,800 PCs in year one; ultimately will deploy over 100,000 PCs with current resources  Number of PCs supported will increase 300% by end of project—managed with same number of IT staff 10

11 Enhanced Security All students run as “Standard Users” Virtualized registry, IE Protected Mode and Group Policy control ensure a stable, protected environment 11

13 Lessons Learned, Best Practices  Professional Development of instructors and administrators perhaps the most important aspect of the project—it’s not just about technology!  Conducted pilot in one elementary, middle and high school before taking to scale  Identify the acceptable log-in and network connection timing; will vary depending on grade level  Management infrastructure a key consideration 13
