Water and Weather Unit Week 15 Directions 1.Prepare your desk for science. 2.Use voice level 0 (no voice) to look at notebook pg. 40 & 41. Think about these questions: What is high pressure? What is low pressure? What is a cold front? What is a warm front?

Targets & Warm Up Targets: Students will read weather maps to determine the weather. Warm Up: What is high pressure? What is low pressure? What is a cold front? What is a warm front?

Weather Maps Meteorologists make weather maps from information gathered using various weather instruments. There are six basic types of weather maps: –Satellite –Radar –Precipitation –Temperature –Wind speed –Front

Satellite Maps

Radar Maps

Temperature Maps

Precipitation Maps

Wind Speed Maps

Fronts Maps

We will focus on… Fronts Maps

Table of Contents DateTitlePage Reading Weather Maps46 Once you are finished with the Table of Contents, go to page 46 and add the title and date to the top of the page.

Weather Map Symbols

Red lines show a warm front. Half circles show the direction it moves. A warm front has warm air replacing cold.

Cold Front and Warm Fronts Cold Front Colder temperatures Rain and heavy storms that last for a short time Warm front Warmer temperatures Light rain that lasts for a long time

Weather Forecast Video Pay attention to the meaning of the four symbols and what weather is expected in areas that have each of the symbols.

Practice Reading Maps

Questions 1.Which city is likely to have sunny and clear skies with no clouds? 2.Which city is likely to have cloudy skies with no change in temperature? 3.Which city is likely to have warmer temperatures and a few days of light rain? 4.Which city is likely to have colder temperatures and one day with heavy rain thunderstorms? Dallas Austin El Paso Houston

Reflection Questions What type of weather can you expect near… – High pressure areas? – Low pressure areas? – Cold fronts? – Warm fronts?

Targets (Revisited) Targets: Students will read weather maps to determine the weather.
