5 ICT WP 2011-12 Objective 3.5 “Core and Disruptive Photonics Technologies” Part B (Disruptive Photonic Technologies) ■ Disruptive photonic technologies are – Technologies at the proof-of-principle stage offering a potential for break-through advances in functionality, performance, component size, or cost reduction – They often exploit effects at the limits of light-matter interaction (e.g. plasmonics, nano-photonics, photonic crystals, …) ■ Objective – Take these technologies from the research lab – Demonstrate their industrial potential through a functional component

6 ICT WP 2011-12 Objective 3.5 “Core and Disruptive Photonics Technologies” Part B (Disruptive Photonic Technologies) Examples ■ Disruptive components for high performance (including extreme high-power) laser systems, in particular respective compact and cost-effective laser sources; ■ Exploiting nano-photonic structures and new materials for PICs of higher performance, functionality or complexity ■ New photonic functions realised in optical fibres by integrating non-conventional materials ■ Electro-optic modulation and signal processing exploiting alternative materials, structures or slow-wave effects ■ New photonic approaches for life sciences, information displays, optical memory and storage

7 ICT WP 2011-12 Objective 3.5 “Core and Disruptive Photonics Technologies” Part E (Coordination and Support Actions) ■ Coordination and Support actions: – ERA-NET for the coordination of national R&D programmes/activities – Technology road-maps for high power / high energy lasers – Coordination between innovation clusters – Targeted international cooperation activities – Coordination of the European photonics RTD constituency in Photonics21 – Access of SMEs and researchers to advanced technologies, design expertise and/or manufacturing facilities – Education and training actions Preparing FP8!  involve the key stakeholders in photonics!
