MAST Users Group – June 29, 2007 MAST Team:  cmo Pat Brown  cmo Alberto Conti  Tony Rogers  Bernie Shiao  Myron Smith  Shui-Ay Tseng  *A. Volpicelli Galaxy Evolution Explorer MAST Users Group: July 9, 2009 NGC 3242

MAST Users Group – July 9, 2009 Recent/Upcoming Milestones: Addition of the GR5 to GR4. Total ≈12 TB, 32,000 + tiles 12 monthly ingests of GI program datasets Late 2009: delivery of GR6 starts (15 TB) Early 2010: GR6 will be supplemented by the first NUV-FUV cross-match catalogs (AIS, MIS surveys)

MAST Users Group – July 9, 2009 Tools and Services: galexView V1.4 --> 1.5: new functionalities (histograms,. prepare for new missions) and addition of technologies Integration (underway) of new Map browser into GALEX site Hosting of crossmatch catalog: SDSS7 and GALEX GR4/5  on CasJobs now (with Tutorial)  in GALEXView V1.5 (beta version) IVOA/SSAP service: single-spectrum customized extraction

MAST Users Group – July 9, 2009 General Annual Usage Statistics (June 08 - June 09) Users  26.7 K visits (non-robotic, non-unique)  averages = 5.7 min/visit, 5.4 pages/visit Data download total  15.8 TB (> 1.2 X GR4+GR5 total data volume) ry GALEX Site Downloads

GALEX Mission  OBJECTIVE To map the evolution of star formation in galaxies to z ~ 2  OBSERVATION MODES oIMAGING, NEAR AND FAR UV (1400-1775 Å, 1825-2800 Å ) ALL SKY MEDIUM & DEEP Fields Nearby Galaxies oGrism Spectra: NUV + FUV. Resolution ~ 100-200 Program driven by: o Science Team research, all sky surveys o Guest Investigator program (now ~1/3) Note: FUV/HV current anomalies are under control (Old, on background)

MAST Users Group – July 9, 2009 Web 2.0 Technologies.NET + AJAX Controls (Microsoft) –Our existing.NET implementation did play well with the AJAX controls. –Image Processing still on the server GWT: Google Web Toolkit –Very easy to write and debug ‘JavaScript’ for ex-Java Programmer –Difficult to perform simple Image Processing and graphics overlay on the client. JavaFX (Sun) –No Graphical Integrated Developing Environment (IDE), not fully supported on all platforms/browsers. Silverlight (Microsoft) –First Release (October 2007) was not a fully integrated development tool. –Creating all controls (i.e, buttons) from complete scratch. –No Data Grid Control. –Mac and Windows only. JavaScript/XSLT (Open Source) –Steep learning curve. –Browser dependency issues. –Very fast Table Processing –Image Processing on the Server Flex (Adobe) –True image processing and data visualization on the client –Easy To Learn Development Tools: ‘Flex Builder’ built on top of industry standard ‘Eclipse’ Web 2.0 Technologies Investigated: (or Web ‘Too Much’ Technology)

MAST Users Group – July 9, 2009 What is Flex? Adobe Flex (Wikipedia) is a collection of technologies released by Adobe for the development and deployment of cross-platform Rich Internet Applications based on the Adobe Flash platform. Adobe Flex (Tony) is a Client Side Technology to build interactive web applications that look/feel more like a desktop application. A Flex Application runs inside a Flash Player. Adobe Flex has an extensive set of tools to aid XML (VOTABLE) parsing, data visualization, plotting and charting. PROS: Flash Player plug-in is installed in most browsers due to ‘YouTube’ and other similar sites. 94% of user accessing GALEX have the Flash Player installed. Truly Write Once – Run Everywhere Almost no Browser or OS Dependencies CONS: Flex DataGrid control performance –Lags for displaying large number of rows and columns. (100 rows, 20 columns and beyond) What is Flex? background
