6 + The White Man’s Burden Coined by Rudyard Kipling, author of the Jungle Book and Riki Tiki Tavi It was the duty and responsibility of the superior European culture to civilize the inferior “dark cultures” in order to help them create a better life for themselves. Kipling wants to ensure that through imperialism, Europeans or Americans should not exploit Africans or Asians, but rather that it is the job of Europeans to bring perceived better conditions to their lives. Paternalism “I maintain that our rule has, and does, bring security and peace and comparative prosperity to countries that never knew these blessings before.” Chamberlain
