Carl Jung By: William Foster

Short biography 1875-1961 Got his first job at a mental hospital Was friends with Freud for five years Broke ties with him due to differences in theories Retired in 1946

Primary study Was the Father of analytical psychology Proposed ideas of introversion and extraversion Was best friends with Sigmund Freud for 5 years Thought the mind, primarily, had a 3 part structure

Cont. Published two books in the 1900’s On the Psychology and Pathology of So-Called Occult Phenomena Studies in Word Association

Mind Structure  Ego- our self identity  Personal unconscious- experiences forgotten or repressed  Collective conscious- deepest part of psych, hundreds of different archetypes and thoughts long forgotten

5 Most Emphasized Archetypes Animus: the masculine part of females Anima the feminine part of males Shadow: our instincts Persona: different roles Self: the part that brings peace and harmony Several dozen more archetypes

Question 1 Why did his work differ from Freud, even though he was such close friends with him for so long?

Dream Analysis Considers them to be related to myth See’s them as a play or a role that you are in Traumatic dreams (now PTSD) and prospective dreams come from the collective unconscious

Compensatory function These tell us which parts and function are out of balance There’s a need in us to express and fully develkope each of our archetypes We also need to harmonies/integrate all parts of our psych

Question 2 When looking at compensatory function, there is little real evidence that it is true, yet it is still held in high regard among psychologists. Why?

Traumatic Dreams Less rational More emotional Less akin to everyday life

Prospective Dreams Representative of a desire for change Often relates to things the dreamer wished he/she had This type of dream can be easily confused with other types of less intense, more common dreams

Question 3 Many theorists, including Jung, simply assume that dreams are often metaphors for what we want, yet there is no systematic or concrete evidence that it is true. Why do they believe it?
