Based on these requirements, we suggest functional blocks for supporting mobile/portable devices in 11ac Slide 2

Examples: cellular/smart phone, PMP, mp3 player, game console and other handheld CE devices Non-examples: laptop computer, netbook, smartbook Characteristics –Battery powered –Small form factor Palm size or smaller –Mobility

5 doc.:IEEE 802.11-09/1050r0 Submission September 23, 2009 Samsung Slide 5 Impacts of MD’s Characteristics Battery powered –Need efficient power saving mechanisms Small form factor –May affect the number of antennas (the number of spatial streams) We consider the maximum number of antennas is limited by 2 (or 4) –Need throughput enhancement features for compensation Multiple channel, higher modulation, (downlink) MU-MIMO Mobility –Most of the time mobile devices will operate in a stationary mode (no movement) –In some cases they may move faster than walking speed Examples include waving the Wi-Fi enabled game controller. This may affect the coherence time

7 doc.:IEEE 802.11-09/1050r0 Submission September 23, 2009 Samsung Slide 7 Power Saving Schemes Extending run time of mobile devices Possible approaches –Enhancement of existing power saving protocols E.g., PSM, APSD, PSMP –New power saving protocol –Higher data rate also helps on power saving STAs can spend less time transmitting/receiving, and more time sleeping.

8 doc.:IEEE 802.11-09/1050r0 Submission September 23, 2009 Samsung Slide 8 Multi-User Support Increasing system throughput –Major requirement in 11ac Possible approaches and Advantages –MU-MIMO Downlink MU-MIMO could be considered as a core feature Good for mobile devices in terms of the number of antennas –Enhanced Aggregation scheme A-MPDU may have Multi Receivers (discussed in 11n) Issues –MPDUs destined to multiple receivers in an A-MPDU may prolong the wake time of the receivers. –Immediate ACK/BlockACK requires new mechanism.

9 doc.:IEEE 802.11-09/1050r0 Submission September 23, 2009 Samsung Slide 9 Multiple Channels Using multiple channels increases system throughput –Need to consider complexity for mobile device Possible approaches and Advantages –Channel Bonding Use wider channels (e.g., contiguous channels) Simple way to increase throughput and easy to be applied in mobile device Issues –Need to have a solution for backward compatibility (e.g., PCO) when channel bonding is used –Use of non-adjacent channels may be too complex and costly for mobile devices. –Support for dynamic channel switching/selection
