The effects of media Fred Civish

Teens are not happy with who they are How many teens are satisfied with their own body shape?

Media’s effect on American youth American youth spend 7-12 hours a day with different forms of media New technologies have added hours to the amount of time youth spend with media Children and teenagers see about 25,000- 40,000 ads per year on T.V. alone.

Different ways teens connect with messages portrayed by the media Megan Laramie

Australian study on homeless youth 1,000 homeless young people ranked body image as the top concern among those aged 11-24. Self esteem is still important for homeless people. What do homeless people do?

Botox Cherice Pempengco, glee actor, received botox to prepare for her appearance on glee. Botox was injected into American ages 13-19 nearly 12,000 times in a year. Botox as medical use? ▫used to treat twitching eyelid or crossed eyes, relieve pain from the jaw, excessive sweating, or involuntary contractions to neck muscles. Doctor injecting for imperfections in teenagers and young adults.

How social media fits in Dallin Beck

Social networking facts Children who use social networking on average have higher self esteem Low self esteem is not fixed by social networking, on the contrary children with low self esteem can actually become more depressed. This is due to the perception that their status updates contribute to a lack of friends Where else can a teen find friends if they can’t even find them on the internet?

Is social networking narcissistic? A study done at Harvard has shown that young adults who use social networking sites often have a higher sense of self confidence than those who did not use such sites

Observational learning Sean Shingleton

The power of the media It all has an overwhelming value system based on looking good, being rich, being in control, and being sexy. Media is where we find our heroes and mentors, Famous people can be a grand moral force, or political force. Average Americans exposure to media has increased by over three times since 1979.

How does observational learning work? Media allows people to see outside of their immediate surroundings and choose opportunities for career goals and growth which they may have never been presented with otherwise Media is defined as a way of communication, and tools for transferring information across distances.

The evidence The bobo doll study ▫Children that were rewarded would act increasingly aggressive towards the doll ▫Fellow classmates observed the violence of the first child and then replicated the violent behavior The 30 year study ▫A decrease of self reporting empathy from college students over that span ▫Exposure to violence has multiplied by three times what it was
