12 Museums and Repatriation Museums – are institutions that collect, preserve, interpret and display objects or artifacts on a regular basis. ***Repatriation – is the returning of art or other artifacts from museums to the people with who they originated.

13 Play, Leisure and Culture **There are several characteristics of what culture dubs play or leisure time: 1. It is an unnecessary activity 2. It serves no direct utilitarian purpose for the participants 3. It is limited in terms of time 4. It has rules 5. It may contain chance and tension Interestingly, leisure activities often overlap with play. -World-wide sports competitions (World Cup soccer etc) -Games, hobbies and recreational travel.

(cock fights, bull fights, wrestling, MMA fights, Sumo wrestling etc). – Many leisure activities combine pleasure and pain including– mountain climbing, marathon running, horseback riding, playing football and boxing.

16 Colonialism and Syncretism Western colonialism had dramatic effects on the expressive culture of indigenous populations. In some cases, colonial disapproval of native art forms, songs, language and sport resulted in their extinction. Some indigenous cultures rebelled against the suppression of their lifestyle(s) but others found ways to couple their cultural traditions and with those of the colonizing culture(s).

17 Leisure Travel, Tourism’s complex effects on indigenous cultures Global tourism has had varied effects on indigenous arts and music. – In many cases, Tourists demand for ethnic arts and souvenirs has led to the mass production of sculpture, woven goods, or jewelry. – Tourists’ interest in seeing “native,” dances, musical concerts and theaters has led to abbreviated forms of the actual performance.

19 Material Cultural heritage – The sites, monuments, buildings, and movable objects considered to have outstanding value to humanity. Intangible cultural heritage – UNESCO’s view of culture as manifested in oral traditions, languages, performing arts, rituals and festive events, knowledge and practices about nature and the universe, and craft-making.
