understand how the future will work exchange information on key projects understand PPARC priorities debate (conclude?) community approach to the PPARC call Andy Lawrence Data Centre meeting March 2003 Goals

AstroGrid Status The VO Vision The Future How AstroGrid Works (Tony) Andy Lawrence Data Centre meeting March 2003 AstroGrid

the project PPARC/EU funded project Sep 2001- Dec 2004 –approx £4M Grid technology development programme –part of UK e-science programme –links to GridPP and Bio-informatics, OGSA Stepping stone to Virtual Observatory –partner in European AVO project –working links with US-VO project –founder member of IVOA open project : join in ! –news/forum/wiki sites –open sw repository

goals infrastructural toolkit for data services –anybody can play exemplar working system datagrid for key UK databases establish UK lead in VO work

status of AstroGrid elaboration phase complete –design : science problems / use cases / UML architecture –technology assessment : tests and reports –standards : joint development with AVO/NVO –demos : AVO/AstroGrid science demo comprehensive Phase A report –reviewed by PPARC October 2002 –freely available on web page construction phase started Jan 2003 –completion Dec 2004

standards programme VOTable –XML format for astro-tables –joint NVO/AVO/AstroGrid work Simple Image Access Protocol –proposal from NVO –under discussion by IVOA Registry standards –led by AstroGrid –IVOA priority-one AQL –led by JVO (Japan)

demo software technology demos : ongoing –first web services, grid services, certificate transmission, server based portlets, etc.. Jan 2003 : AVO "first light" Jul 2003 : IAU Sydney Useable releases intended each semester Beta Tester volunteers wanted !!

AVO first light : Jodrell Jan 2003 multi-site analysis –client in Jodrell (and other sites since) –data served from Strasbourg and Garching –number crunching in Cambridge based on GOODS multi- dataset CDS : image integration in Aladin ESO : plot SEDs of selected objects AstroGrid : on-the-fly source extraction (ACE)

component model Portal Registry Workflow AstroPass MySpace Toolset

Customisable portal

what do we need ? sociology –need agreed formats for data, metadata, provenance –need standardised semantics (vocabulary and ontology) internet/grid technology –need protocols for publishing and exchanging data –need registry for publishing service availability and semantics –need method of transmitting authentication/authorisation –need methods for managing distributed resources

geometry of the VO not a centralised superarchive not P2P ( like Napster) not a hierarchy ( like LHC grid) is small club of service providers plus large population of end-users

yesterday browser front end CGI request html web page DB engine SQL data

today application web service SOAP/XML request SOAP/XML data DB engine SQL native data anything standard formats

tomorrow application web service job results anything web service web service web service web service web service Registry Workflow VO AstroPass MySpace standard semantics publish WSDL not really a block.....more a cloud of interoperable pieces

day after tomorrow application grid service job results anything grid service grid service grid service grid service grid service Registry VO MySpace pooled resource

who does what the VO projects will : –evolve agreed data standards –build infrastructural toolkit for data exchange –build registry of available data services Data Centres will : –maintain data in whatever format they like –use toolkit to write standard data services –publish services to registry Tool writers will : –write client tools that understand VO formats –write server based visualisation tools –write server based analysis tools

Observatories / instrument builders need to : –output data to new standards –link observing request to VO research –decide whether to provide data services or farm out to data centres AstroGrid also will : –provide first example data services for key UK databases –provide example "point of entry" user interface –provide some resource : warehouse, CPU, "MySpace" who does what part(II)

The Future : VO perspective VO Infrastructure never finished –update engine with new technologies –new functionalities (eg ontology) VO needs populating with content –data centres publish services : effort –new way or working : training and support VO needs Tools –user tools : parameter plotting, streaming visualisation etc –facility class analysis as services : correlation functions etc

empower UK astronomers –should be automatic if we have done our job right target key science datasets –WFCAM, VISTA –ALMA, ELT –Herschel, Planck, GAIA, Eddington –LISA ? Darwin ? –etc etc The Future : astro perspective

AVO partnership evolving into "Euro-VO" Three components –VO Facility Centre (VOFC) –VO Technology Centre (VOTC) –Data Centre Alliance (DCA) Proposals in three parts –April 15, May 6, October AstroGrid consortium as UK-node The Future : euro perspective

opportunity in PPARC call opportunity in FP6 astro + solar + STP ?? separates or cartel ? The Future : political perspective

... and now Tony....
