Today’s Agenda…12-1 Bellringer: What is an electromagnet? Take up homework Review Magnet Worksheet from Monday Notes on Waves – Study Pack #13 Exit Slip

WAVES Study Pack #13

Today’s Goals… I can explain the relationship between waves, energy, and matter. I can describe the difference between transverse waves, and compressional waves.

What is a wave? The way energy moves from place to place Examples: – Sound moves from my mouth to your ears – Light moves from a bulb to a book page to your eyes – Heat waves move from the sun to the Earth

What is a wave? How does energy move in a wave? – All waves are produced by something that is vibrating (moving) – That energy is transferred to particles – Then, particles bump into each other and transfer energy from one to the next – In a wave, the energy moves, but not the matter – A model for waves; page 227

Mechanical Waves Waves that need matter to transfer energy That matter that the wave travels through is called the medium Example: – For waves in an ocean, the medium is the water – Sound waves travel through the medium of air

Mechanical Waves There are two types of mechanical waves: – Transverse – Compressional

Transverse Waves Energy causes the matter in the medium to move up and down or side to side Example: Waves in water Figure 3 Draw a picture of a transverse wave

Compressional Wave Matter in the medium moves back and forth Example: Sound waves; page 229 Figure 4 Draw a picture of a compressional wave

Electromagnetic Waves Waves that can travel through space where there is no matter Examples: radio waves and light waves

See what they look like! WAVES

Exit Slip What is the relationship between waves, energy, and matter? Describe the difference between transverse and compressional waves. Put your answers in the tray on the way out!
