 OBJECTIVE: improve quality of life for thousands of people (mostly children) living alongside the Lima, Lurigancho/Chosica ‘Rimac” river, where 5,000 Bio Sand water Filters are urgently needed (5,000x15 per filter = 75,000 total).  Contributions accepted Club to Club, or minimum Matching Grant of $11,700 which will cover 117 filters ($100 each: 50 filter, plus 50 installation & training) CLEAN WATER FOR PERU

PROJECT PROCESS  Bio Sand Filter: Training by CAWST, Diana Frost, Andrea Roach & Paul Earwaker  Community Selection: Communities were involved in the decision to use BSF  Training: Manufacture, installation and teach communities hygienic norms & BSF  Technical support & Project Execution: Contracted to EDES and CAWST  Financial Assistance (first project MG 66806): The Rotary Foundation, RC Holmen, RC LMV and RC Gibson, Canada: projector and part of CAWST initial training  Workshops and Seminars: Started in 2007, will continue throughout the duration of the project until the communities become self sufficient (build, use and maintain filters).

BIO SAND WATER FILTERS (BSF)LID Prevents dirt and impurities from entering the filter. DIFFUSER PLATE Protects biological layer when water is poured in. Biological layer Schmutzdecker Keeps biological filter layer system alive FINE SAND Retains bacteria and contaminants. EXIT TUBE Passes filtered water to the exterior container. GRAVEL Helps the flow of water toward the exit tube. COARSE SAND Keeps fine sand separate from gravel.

 For use mainly in homes, schools orphanages, churches & social orgs.  Produces 1.2 litrs in 2 min, enough daily clean water for 10/15 people  No electricity, maintenance or spare parts required, last for ever  Need to pour water periodically, allowing rest time between pours.  Weight: Empty: 72kg (158 lbs), Full 160 kg (352 lbs) - Height1.05m (41inch). Four Sides: 0.35m (14inch).  For better quality, add 4 drops of bleach per liter of water filtered.  Water containing chlorine should not be filtered, kills the biological layer, Schmutzdecker (German). Coarse Gravel Fine Gravel

Rapid growth of population in Lima is leading to an expansion of unplanned informal settlements, which lack basic urban services such as waste management, clean water and drainage, contaminating the river with pathogens Contaminated water in many communities along the riverbank, many people manually collect or buy it from trucks to use untreated water for their households.

Delivering and collecting contaminated water brought in trucks from Rimac river

Comunnity of ‘27 de Junio’ first BSF water filters installed 2007

N=14 WELLS at ’27 DE JUNIO COMMUNITY’ Wells were highly contaminated with feacal matter (99% samples) The study identified the river as the major source of pollution, surface contamination of uncovered wells were also causes of infections.

’San Pedro and San Pablo’ y ‘Villa Esperanza de Jicamarca’, both in Lurigancho Chosica district, Lima Community Sellection for250 filters MG 66806

Closing the exposed wells to prevent external contamination

Workshops, focus groups & surveys to promote health awareness & education. Weekly diarrhea occurrences analyzed to assess effects of BSF, before & after Water samples collected to detect parasites in children (started march, 2007). Baseline surveys

1.Educational sessions were held focusing on key hygiene messages to protect infants against diarrhea: washing hands before preparing food and after using the toilet, safely disposing of infant faeces, and safely storing water in the house to prevent microbial re-contamination Training workshops

Community leader Maria Moron, sharing the skills acquired by community members. building filters, admired by Government offices Municipalities & NGO’s. Team effort effect: Community, Rotary Municipality, Edes and Cawst

Community members involved in building filters Panchita Juana Mirian AdeliaAidé Community Fathers learn how to buid filters, while Mothers wash sand that goes in the filters and promote health & use at their homes

Results of lab Tests Wells water quality Before BSF: 756 MNP of CF/100 ml. not good for consumption After BSF: 11 MNP of CF/100 ml, a bacterial removal of over 98.6%. Additionally, mothers comments about their water after BSF “improved the flavour, no more insects or fine sand, it is cleaner and more crystalline”

Before BSF, lab results showed protozoa re-infection in more than 60%, Giardia lamblia (70%) and Blastocystis hominis (40%) in children which decreased significantly after filters were used. After BSF mothers also noted children diarrhea occurrences were cut in half. Health improvement
