Lesson Menu Five-Minute Check (over Lesson 6–6) Main Idea Example 1:Problem-Solving Investigation

Main Idea/Vocabulary I will choose the best strategy to solve a problem.

Example 1 VICTOR: I bought a small pizza at Pizza Palace. The price of an extra large pizza is equal to 2 times the price of a small pizza plus $3. If the price of an extra large pizza is $17, how much did I pay for the small pizza? YOUR MISSION: Find the price of a small pizza.

Example 1 Understand What facts do you know? You know that the price of an extra large pizza is $17. The price of an extra large pizza is equal to 2 times the price of a small pizza plus $3. What do you need to find? You need to find the price of a small pizza.

Example 1 Plan To solve this problem, you can work backward.

Example 1 Solve Since subtraction is the opposite of addition, take the price of the extra large pizza and subtract $3. $17 – $3 = $14 Since division is the opposite of multiplication, divide $14 by 2. $14 ÷ 2 = $7 Answer: The cost of a small pizza is $7.

Example 1 Check Look back at the problem. Start with the price of a small pizza and multiply by 2. Then add $3. Since ($7 × 2) + $3 = $17, the answer is correct.
