3  Aristotle’s views on the physical sciences shaped centuries of knowledge, extending into the renaissance.  His works show the earliest known formal study of logic, which transformed into present-day, formal logic.

4  Established his own school known as the Lyceum in 335 BC  Gave lessons to Alexander the great, Ptolemy, and Cassander; all future kings  It is suggested that Aristotle was the last person to know everything there was to be known in his own time  Only a fraction of his written works still survive.

5  Polish mathematician and astromomer  Formulated a heliocentric (sun centered) model for the universe.  His works contributed significantly to the scientific revolution

6  Had a doctorate in canon law  Without degrees he was also a: ◦ Physician ◦ Polyglot ◦ Classics scholar ◦ Translator ◦ Governor ◦ Diplomat ◦ Economist  Set down quantity theory of money, which is used in present day economics

7  Italian physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher  Known as the father of: modern physics, modern observational astronomy, science, modern science  Played a major role in the scientific revolution

8  Some of his achievements include: ◦ Improvements to the telescope ◦ Astronomical observations and support for Copernicanism  Was a large champion for heliocentrism, and was investigated by the Roman Inquisition  Later found guilty of heresy when supporting his views in Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems which appeared to attack Pope Urban VIII  Forced to recant and spent the rest of his life under house arrest.
