The 5 W’s of Teaching Katie Durbec Edc 415 Katie Durbec Edc 415

Who am I? My name is Katie Durbec. Originally from Nyack, New York, I moved up to Rhode Island for school and received a BA in secondary education and a BA in mathematics at the University of Rhode Island. I love to travel, practice yoga, and spend time on the water in my kayak.

a few places I’ve traveled to... San Diego, CA St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands Yellowstone, Wyoming

Why do I want to be a teacher? While attending school I always had a knack for numbers and problem solving and was always happy to tutor friends and classmates in mathematics. I felt good when they would say to me, “Wow that makes so much sense now. I wish my math teacher could explain it to me like you do”. I decided sophomore year of college to become a teacher and become able to open students minds to see math differently. I don’t believe that there are “math and science people” or “english and history people”. I believe that any student can think and reason mathematically given the opportunity. The reason I want to be a teacher is to give every student that opportunity and change my students minds about math.

My Philosophy Managerial: I believe students spending maximum time on task and engaged is key to a successful learning environment Authoritative: A clear set of rules and expectations is the base of a safe and organized learning environment When students understand what is expected of them, they will be less likely to misbehave

My Philosophy Folkloric: The knowledge and advice of other professionals can be a great resource when managing my classroom, especially as a beginning teacher Behavioral: Encouraging good behavior and appropriately addressing bad behavior will set a tone for how students should behave in my classroom

My Philosophy Making use of multiple approaches to classroom management will lead to a class full of well rounded students who feel open to learning and exploring in my classroom. I want to center the class around my students and use topics that interest them to lead lessons. I want them to form opinions and explore them both individually and in groups. I will monitor my students progress using frequent informal and formal assessment.
