3. J-1 Non Student Exchange Visitors Cultural and knowledge exchange Academic staff Employee in Training Non – tenure track positions At minimum, the individual must have a completed Bachelor’s degree Length of stay: 1 day  5 years Mandatory health insurance requirement

4. F-1 International Students on OPT Recent graduates Work in their field of study Initial OPT Granted for 12 months – Some graduates can extend OPT for additional 17 months Specific questions should be addressed to the International Student Services office at the Red GymInternational Student Services

5. B1/B2 Visitors Visitor for business or pleasure Cannot be an employee of the University Cannot be paid wages by the University Travel expenses can be reimbursed Length of stay determined by purpose of visit – Typically, no longer than 6 months Invitation letter needed from the UW department

6. H-1B Temporary Non Immigrant Worker Faculty, Academic staff, Employee in Training Position must require at least a Bachelor’s degree in a specialty occupation Individual must possess the minimum education, training and experience required for the position Prevailing wage Up to 6 years, with limited exceptions Dual intent

7. E-3 for Australians Very similar to H-1Bs Only for Australian citizens Academic Staff, Employees in Training Position must require at least a Bachelor’s degree in a specialty occupation Individual must have the minimum education, training and experience required for the position Prevailing wage Indefinite length of stay – Status valid in increments of up to two years at a time

8. TN—Trade NAFTA Treaty Only for Mexican and Canadian Citizens Indefinite length of stay – Status valid in increments of up to three years at a time Position must be listed on the Schedule 2 of the Trade NAFTA TreatySchedule 2 of the Trade NAFTA Treaty

9. O-1 Extraordinary Ability Academic staff or faculty appointment Initial O-1 for three years – Subsequent extensions for one year at a time – Indefinite length of stay Very subjective petition Must be at the top of their field

10. Permanent Residency—Teaching Faculty Position must have teaching component National recruitment conducted Select the most qualified

11. Permanent Residency—Academic Staff Research Positions Must hold permanent position Must have at least three years of post degree experience Must be at the top of their field internationally and nationally Petition is very subjective
