2 © UNICEF UK Responsive feeding A sensitive reciprocal relationship between a mother and her baby. A mother responds to her baby when  he shows feeding cues  he is distressed or lonely  her breasts are full  she simply wants a sit down and cuddle Breastfed babies cannot be overfed or ‘spoiled’ by frequent feeding!

3 © UNICEF UK Signs of insufficient milk intake  Low urine output (fewer than six wet nappies in 24 hours after Day 3-4)  Abnormal stool pattern, i.e.:  No changing stool by Day 3  No yellow stool by Day 5  Fewer than 2 stools per day (under 4-6 weeks)  Suck:swallow ratio greater that 2:1  Persistent jaundice  Excessive weight loss (first week) or slow/no weight gain (older baby)
