1 Chandra Education & Public Outreach CXC 1.What Are the Goals of Your Mission's E/PO? Chandra E/PO Goals Increase public engagement with the Space Science Enterprise by conveying Chandra's discoveries about the universe to diverse public audiences: -Proactively seek the widest range of public audiences. -Seek most effective ways to communicate X-ray discoveries: broader context to include multi-wavelength, other missions, and fundamental questions. -Produce products tailored to needs of specific audiences. Promote science literacy by engaging the imaginations of students, teachers and the general public through a wide range of informal education products and resources. Increase learning opportunities in science, math, & technology. Provide classroom resources and products aligned with national standards utilizing the Chandra mission's science context, technology, and discoveries. Provide ready access to images and education products to promote widespread dissemination. Utilize wide range of technologies & formats for accessibility by diverse audiences.

2 Chandra Education & Public Outreach CXC 2. What Was the Process Used to Define and Plan the Chandra E/PO Program? In the beginning: Used OSS E/PO Strategic Plan as a Guideline Consulted extant successful E/PO efforts, e.g. Hubble Consulted NASA educators, other educators involved with space science Developed program to meet main goals within available budget On-going program review, revision: On-going interaction with OSS, OSS E/PO, Universe!Forum, Forum activities, other missions, NASA Ed. Division, & other education initiatives provides information and feedback on which to base changes in overall emphasis and direction. Project reviews, User Committee review, focus groups, user evaluation forms, and user comments provide information and feedback to clarify and help to define specific activities and products to carry out E/PO goals.

3 Chandra Education & Public Outreach CXC 3. What Have Been the Program's Most Significant Accomplishments to Date? Award winning web site: 82 awards for content and presentation, average 5M hits per month, usage continuing to grow Collaboration on two Passport to Knowledge programs (Live From a Black Hole, Live From the Edge of Space and Time): multiple rebroadcasts on NASA TV & Public Television with potential to reach audience of several million viewers. Gave over 300 permissions worldwide for use of Chandra material, including all major astronomy text books, several electronic university courses, and books aimed at pre-college levels. Worldwide distribution of over 600,000 printed items (posters, coloring books, lithographs, bookmarks, postcards, sticker books) and 35,000 CD's of Chandra images. Increasing number of invitations to present at science education workshops: AAPT national, ERC's, several state science teacher conferences. Accepted for all three NSTA Regional meetings this fall.

4 Chandra Education & Public Outreach CXC 4.What Are the Biggest Challenges you Face in Planning and Implementing Your Program? OSS has developed a highly successful education initiative that is generating an ever increasing number of new opportunities. There is tremendous potential. Our greatest challenges in responding to the success of this initiative are: How do we take advantage of newly emerging opportunities within the constraints of the long-term budget planning process for space science missions? How do we evaluate and prioritize among the increasing requests for support and participation of mission resources? How do we ensure timely sharing of information among OSS missions and between OSS and other NASA education components to avoid duplication, reinvention, and/or missed opportunities for synergistic collaboration? How do we better utilize the E/PO proposal opportunities associated with successful mission science proposals? How do we ensure long term consistency and direction of the OSS strategy as it devolves through the infrastructure to the missions? What is the appropriate level of infrastructure support? The building blocks and organizational elements of the initiative need time to grow and mature. Would like to see “tweaks” at this point, not fundamental changes in direction.
