2 What are applications? Applications are what the employers sees before they see you.

3 Application Is a form or collection of forms that an individual seeking employment must fill out as part of the job seeking process.

4 What’s so important? Many people lose jobs before they get them. They don’t get the job because of what they write or don’t write on the job application.

5 What’s so important? An application gives potential employers important information about you which will help them make a hiring decision.

6 Applications There is no standard employment application form for all companies. Companies make their own form so interviewers can quickly locate items.

7 Applications The employment applications represents the quality of work you will perform for a company.

8 Application forms will tell the employers the following: How well you follow instructions What you have achieved in school and work How thorough and neat you are How will you have held a job in the past.

9 What I need? What to take when filling out an application? 2 pens (black or blue) 2 forms of ID DRIVERS LICENSE SOCIAL SECURITY CARD BIRTH CERTIFICATE REPORT CARD DEBIT CARD 3

10 References? References are people who will recommend you to an employer You must ask permission to use people as references. Responsible people 18 years or older Have a job Homemakers or retirees would not be the best references 4

11 Examples of References Former employers Teachers Co-workers Club or Organization Leaders Neighbors Parent’s Friends Church Friends NOTE: Need 4 to 5 References 6

12 What to list? For each reference (4-5) list the following: Name Business Title Company or Organization Address Telephone Number 7

13 Educational Information Include grade school to present Name and address of schools Diploma or degrees earned Date attended at each school 8

14 Employers You will need to list work experience from present to past jobs Name Address Telephone Numbers Dates of Employment Job Responsibilities Pay Name of Supervisors Reason for leaving each job *Include Military and Volunteer Work 9

15 Reason for Leaving Explain the reason for leaving in a positive way Wanted more hours Job advancement Relocation Laid-off (company down-sized Health Retraining (continuing education) Travel 10

16 General Information Read the entire application before starting Read and follow directions exactly Keep application neat and clean (stay in the lines or box) If question doesn’t apply…write N/A in blank

17 General Info Keep your options “OPEN” for salary or “Negotiable” Never lie or exaggerate on job applications If you have been convicted of a crime you will have to list it, if not convicted you don’t have to list it. Be sure to sign and date
