Nuclear and Plasma Science Society TRANSNATIONAL IEEE GROWTH

Nuclear and Plasma Science Society WHAT IS NPSS? l The Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society is one of the 39 IEEE units with 2722 members (in July 2005). l One third of NPSS live outside US and is growing. l Where do the ‘Transnationals’ live? l 496 live in Europe or Africa or the Mid-East l 298 live in Asia l 71 live in Canada l 25 live in Latin America l Transnational growth is higher than that for US

Nuclear and Plasma Science Society OF NPSS EUROPEAN MEMBERS l 69 live in France l 65 live in Germany l 62 live in the UK l 55 live in Italy l 22 live in Switzerland l 20 live in Belgium l 20 live in Sweden l 20 live in Russia l 19 live in Spain l 17 live in Sweden l 15 live in Netherlands l 13 live in Ukraine l 13 live in Greece l 8 live in Czech Republic l 7 live in Finland l 6 live in Croatia l 6 live in Ireland l 5 live in Portugal l 4 live in Hungary l 4 live in Norway l 4 live in Egypt l 39 live in other countries of Europe, Africa, Mid-East

Nuclear and Plasma Science Society OF NPSS ASIAN MEMBERS l 162 live in Japan l 44 live in Korea l 28 live in Australia l 21 live in China l 14 live in India l 13 live in Taiwan l 6 live in Hong Kong l 3 live in Singapore l 2 live in Thailand l 1 lives in New Zealand

Nuclear and Plasma Science Society SOME IEEE MEMBERS BELONG TO SOCIETIES l Members with Societies Higher Grade = 174K Students = 27K Total = 201K 57% of IEEE members belong to at least one society. On average, they belong to 1.7 societies. l Members without Societies Higher Grade = 109K Students = 41K Total = 150K These members receive only the Spectrum and other IEEE publications

Nuclear and Plasma Science Society IEEE SOCIETY MEMBERSHIP IS DECLINING Division I (5 societies)……………………...-4.6% Division II (4 societies)…………………..…-2.9% Communications Technology……………-11.6% EM and Radiation (7 societies)………...…-1.2% Computer……………………………………+2.4% Division VI (6 societies)……………………-1.9% Energy and Power………………………… -0.8% Division IX (6 societies)……………..…… -3.0% Division X (8 societies)………………..…. -2.4%

Nuclear and Plasma Science Society NPSS MEMBERSHIP IS DECLINING NPSS, one of the Division IV (now called the Electromagnetic and Radiation division) has suffered declining membership in 2003, 2004 and now in 2005 Our membership level at end of September 2005 stood at 2762 members, down 3.3% from last September. Overall IEEE society decline was -2.4% At the end of the year, I predict we will have ~2800 for a somewhat permanent loss of ~60 members. Our average membership is ~2700

Nuclear and Plasma Science Society HOW BAD IS OUR LOSS% Not so Bad…. We doing about as well as other societies in IEEE. Some of our losses are from people who are casual visitors. Perhaps if the loss rate declines, we may stabilize at a level where most will remain members. Very Bad…. Our society is aging. We need recruiting especially at conferences where we can attract young ‘starters’

Nuclear and Plasma Science Society CAN WE MAKE NPSS MORE ATTRACTIVE? Most often question asked at the conference IEEE recruiting table. “Why should I join IEEE? I get Xplore at my work and my organization pays for my attendance at this conference”. The next question often asked is “I am a member of IEEE. Why should I also join NPSS?” I struggle at each conference trying to respond to these questions, especially the NPSS question.

Nuclear and Plasma Science Society WHAT CAN WE OFFER NPSS MEMBERS? Only about 1/3 of NPSS ever go to our conferences. Only about 1/3 of NPSS have our society as the only one they belong to. Another third of our society have other societies as their primary interest and are only casual members of NPSS. At a typical major NPSS conference, about half the attendees are IEEE members and only half of those are NPSS members. Can we persuade more conference attendees to become NPSS members? What can we do to help the many NPSS people who can’t or won’t come to the conferences?

Nuclear and Plasma Science Society PODCASTING MAY HELP IEEE is experimenting with a variety of new forms for communication, starting with IEEE Spectrum Radio, Tech Talk Blogs, RSS headline feeds, sample articles from Xplore, etc. NPSS could provide podcasting of some of the invited speakers at our symposia and make these available to active members of our society. Audio recording is already done. A member may thus be able to read the paper in a journal and at the same time listen to the speaker who presented it. This would benefit those who are unable to come to the conference and still feel rewarded for his or her NPSS membership.
