Applying SETT Assistive Technology Assessment to Adult AT Users: A Case Study By Cindy Anderson Roosevelt University Kevin Anderson District 401 Elmwood Park, IL

SETT Framework Authored by Joy Zabala (http://www.joyzabala.com/)http://www.joyzabala.com/ It is “a flexible tool that makes concerns, identification and solution-seeking processes accessible to all and is useful in all phases decision-making and service delivery.”

SETT Framework The problem: – I have Dupuytren’s Contracture. It is a disease of the palmar fascia that is of a genetic nature. Basically, what happens is that the palms overproduce tissue much like scar tissue, resulting in nodules and cords that can lead to the contracture of fingers, disability, and potentially amputation of fingers.

SETT Framework As I teach special education technology, I applied the SETT Framework. This frameworks states that “teams must first develop a shared understanding of the student, the customary environments in which the student spends time, and the tasks that are required for the student to be able to do or learn to do to be an active participant in the teaching/learning processes that lead to educational success. When the needs, abilities, and interests of the Student, the details of the Environments, and the specific Tasks required of students in those environments are fully explored, teams are able to consider what needs to be included in a system of tools that is Student- centered, Environmentally useful, and Tasks- focused.

SETT Framework The objective is to share information on the student's abilities, preferences and barriers to learning and to work for group consensus. Remember, no matter how great the needs, everyone has abilities and preferences that can be built upon and enhanced.

SETT Framework Questions to ask of the student: –What does the Student need to do? (main areas of concern) –What are the Student's special needs? –What are the Student's current abilities?

SETT Framework Environment: –Every different environment must be considered.

SETT Framework Questions to Ask About Environment: –What are the instructional and physical arrangements? Are there special concerns? –What materials and equipment are currently available in the environments? –What supports are available to the student and the people working with the student on a daily basis? –How are the attitudes and expectations of the people in the environment likely to affect the student’s performance?

SETT Framework Start with “What is everyone else doing,” but recognize that participating in the same activities does not lead to the same results for all students. A simplified task analysis may be helpful to determine what elements of a task would be difficult or impossible for a student to do without significant assistance. For the Tasks, identify What We Know and What We Need To Know

SETT Framework Questions to ask about the Tasks –What activities occur in the student's natural environments which enable progress toward mastery of identified goals? –What is everyone else doing? – What are the critical elements of the activities? of the activities?

SETT Framework Questions for tools: –Is a system of AT tools and strategies required for a student with these needs and abilities to do these tasks in these environments? –What no tech, low tech, and high tech options should be considered? –How might the student's special needs be accommodated without changing the critical elements of the activities? –Will modifications be necessary? –What strategies might be used?

SETT Framework Generating the solutions and trying out tools. Brainstorm solutions Borrow the tools for trial period.activities?

SETT Framework Applying this framework to case study.

SETT Framework Questions to ask of the adult: –What does the Adult need to do? Use the computer for job. Write for job. Use silverware. Open jars. Bead. Play Native American flute.

SETT Framework Questions to ask of the adult: –What are the Adult’s special needs? Pain during typing Decreasing flexibility in fingers Inability to grip Painful palms Nodules on fingers that interfere with activities both as lumps and due to pain.

SETT Framework Questions to ask of the adult: –What are the Adult’s current abilities? Able to lay the hand flat. Able to use the hand to type with gloves but not for the extended lengths of time that the job requires. Able to grasp loosely.

SETT Framework Questions to ask of the adult: –What are the instructional and physical arrangements? Are there special concerns? Lots of typing required for job and pain when typing Lots of jar and bottle opening and not able to do it Lots of writing required for the job. Painful to hold pen

SETT Framework Questions to ask of the adult: –What materials and equipment are currently available in the environments? Since adult teaches the special education technology course, there are items available such as apps and low tech pens.

SETT Framework Questions to ask of the adult: –What supports are available to the adult and the people working with the adult on a daily basis? All the resources and people in the field that I know. –How are the attitudes and expectations of the people in the environment likely to affect the adult’s performance? Husband is available and supportive Professionals who are specialists in the area work with adult.

SETT Framework Questions to ask of the adult: –How are the attitudes and expectations of the people in the environment likely to affect the adult’s performance? Support

SETT Framework Questions to ask about the Tasks –What activities occur in the adult's natural environments which enable progress toward mastery of identified goals? –What is everyone else doing? – What are the critical elements of the activities?

SETT Framework Questions to ask about the Tasks implies using what is already in the environment: – Job involves technology – Computer and iPad built-ins for access, readily available for use

SETT Framework iPad - Siri for voice command and Dragon Dictation for typing Built-in voice commands on Mac and Windows

SETT Framework Environmental low tech items that I had – Ring pen – Livescribe pen for easy writing and recording meetings – Fat pens – Just keeping doors open and using openers

SETT Framework Questions to ask about the Tasks –What is everyone else doing? – What are the critical elements of the activities?

SETT Framework Questions to ask about the Tasks –What are the critical elements of the activities? –

SETT Framework Questions for tools: –Is a system of AT tools and strategies required for an adult with these needs and abilities to do these tasks in these environments? Alternatives for typing and mousing: –Mouse use is painful. Alternatives tried and used: »Logitech trackball »Magic trackpad and built-in trackpad; Logitech trackpad »Dragon Dictate »Bookshare

SETT Framework Questions for tools: –What no tech, low tech, and high tech options should be considered? Pens grips Ring pen Bottle opener Cloth bottle opener Hand heaters, arthritis gloves, sting pads Padding on carts and car steering wheel Easy-push stapler Pump toothpaste dispenser Silverware with curved sides; arthritis Phone holder

SETT Framework Questions for tools: –How might the adult's special needs be accommodated without changing the critical elements of the activities? Use the assistive tech devices.

SETT Framework Questions for tools: –Will modifications be necessary? Yes, combine heating pads with sting pads with arthritis gloves when typing. Put foam on handles of tools as they become too hard for use, i.e. handles of jar opener, padding on canoe paddles,

SETT Framework Questions for tools: –What strategies might be used? Tools must be carried at all times to be available when necessary, i.e. when people hand over a pen, the disability pen needs to be accessible to substitute. For my job that requires a lot of typing, I vary among the tools. For long items, I use Dragon. For shorter elements of typing, I use workout gloves that seem to diminish the aching like compression gloves. When really bad, I use the heating pads, sting pads and compression gloves. Strategies will change if/when contracture begins.
