I want to teach my students the skills they need to: – intake (read and listen) and – output (write) English at an intermediate-high level so that they can continue their education in an English- speaking institution.

4 English 85 Objectives»»»» In English 85, instructor will introduce/present/teach: Intermediate-high level reading Intermediate-high level grammar principles such as coordinating and subordinating conjunctions, pronoun agreement, subject-verb agreement, comma splice, and fragment sentences Intermediate-high level writing style principles such as creating and supporting a thesis, sentence variety, parallelism, and natural sounding vocabulary usage The elements of a unified and coherent paragraph How to write a unified and coherent paragraph English 85 SLOs (1 st draft) Upon completion of English 85 students will be able to: Comprehend intermediate-high level ESL texts and dictation; (Course Objective 1) Recognize and avoid grammatical, syntactical, and mechanical errors such as fragments, comma splices, subject-verb agreement errors, and pronoun errors; (Course Objective 2) Write paragraphs (5—7 sentences) using sentence variety, parallelism, and intermediate- high level vocabulary; (Course Objective 3) Develop unified and coherent paragraphs (5—7 sentences) with a clear topic sentence, specific and adequate support, and minimal errors in grammar, punctuation, spelling, format, and vocabulary usage. (Course Objectives 2, 3, 4)

5 English 85 SLOs (1 st draft) »»»» Upon completion of English 85 students will be able to: 1.Demonstrate comprehension of intermediate-high level ESL texts and dictation; 2.Recognize grammatical, syntactical, and mechanical errors such as fragments, comma splices, subject-verb agreement errors, and pronoun errors; 3.Write paragraphs (5—7 sentences) using sentence variety, parallelism, and intermediate-high level vocabulary; 4.Write unified and coherent paragraphs (5—7 sentences) with a clear topic sentence, specific and adequate support, and minimal errors in grammar, punctuation, spelling, format, and vocabulary usage. English 85 SLOs (final-option A) Upon completion of English 85, students will be able to: 1.respond to intermediate-high-level ESL texts and dictation by composing a unified and coherent paragraph (5-7 sentences) with a clear topic sentence, specific and adequate support, and a conclusion sentence; 2.demonstrate competency in English grammar by composing a unified and coherent paragraph with minimal errors in grammar, punctuation, spelling, vocabulary usage, and format.

English 85 SLO (final-option B) 1.Upon completion of English 85, students will be able to perform a real world task requiring competency in the English language that demonstrates meaningful application of essential knowledge and skills according to the course objectives. Examples of ESL essential knowledge and skills at the intermediate-high level may include but are not limited to: a) responding to intermediate-high-level ESL texts and dictation, and b) composing a unified and coherent paragraph (5-7 sentences) with a clear topic sentence, specific and adequate support, and a conclusion sentence, with minimal errors in grammar, punctuation, spelling, vocabulary usage, and format.
