Warm Up: Friday 3/15/13 Identify 2 important tips you must remember when you are conducting your interview. Use the worksheets I handed out yesterday to answer the question. 10/30/20151

2 Creating questions Part I: Look at the following questions: –How did you feel about what happened? _____ –Why do you think World War II was called “the good war?” _____ –How many people were with you at the time the event took place? _____ Think about it… –How do these questions differ from one another? –Which question might prove to be difficult for an interviewee to answer? Why?

10/30/20153 Creating questions Part II: Interviewers will generally use three categories of question types during a productive interview. –open ended – designed to encourage a full, meaningful answer using the subject's own knowledge and/or feelings; these questions also tend to be more objective and less leading

10/30/20154 Open ended questions… … typically begin with words such as "Why" and "How", or phrases such as "Tell me about...". Often they are not technically a question, but a statement which implicitly asks for a response.

10/30/20155 Creating Questions Subjective – questions that are asked in a way to extract a certain response Close ended - encourages a short or single-word answer

10/30/20156 Close ended questions… have the following characteristics: –They give you facts. –They are easy to answer. –They are quick to answer. –They keep control of the conversation with the questioner.

10/30/20157 Write about it… Why should a group of interview questions contain a variety of question types? When should a closed ended question be used during an interview? Which type(s) of questions would be most beneficial to use with your interviewee? Why? What should be the first thing you ask your interviewee? When might be the best time to ask sensitive or controversial questions? Why?

Warm Up: Monday 3/18/13 When might be the best time to ask sensitive or controversial questions? Why? 10/30/20158

9 Creating questions Prepare a list of six questions based on your research. You should write two questions for each category of question type.

10/30/201510 Homework You should emphasize open ended questions and consider a logical sequence to follow when asking the interview questions. Due Wednesday March 20: 15 questions to ask your interviewee broken down by question type (open ended, subjective, closed ended)
