2 Sacraments The Sacraments are the seven sacred signs that celebrate God’s love for us and Christ’s presence in our lives in the Church. There are seven sacraments: 1.Baptism5. Holy Orders 2.Reconciliation6. Matrimony 3.Holy Eucharist7. Anointing of the Sick 4.Confirmation

3 Sacraments There are three types of sacraments: 1. Sacraments of Initiation – are sacraments that make us full members of the Church. These sacraments give or strengthen our grace and relationship with God 1.Baptism 2.Eucharist 3.Confirmation 2. Sacraments of Healing – are sacraments that celebrate God’s forgiveness and healing 1.Reconciliation 2.Anointing of the Sick

4 Sacraments 3. Sacraments at the Service of Communion – are sacraments that celebrate ways people serve God by sharing their gifts with others 1.Holy Orders 2.Matrimony

5 Sin Through the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Jesus gave the Church the power to forgive sin. There are two types of sin: 1.Mortal Sin 2.Venial Sin Through the prayer of absolution, the priest forgives all our sins in the name of God and the Church.

6 Types of Sin mortal sin is a serious sinA mortal sin is a serious sin that separates us from God’s grace. To commit a mortal sin, a person must do something that is very wrong, know it’s wrong, and do it anyway. Ex. Murder venial sin is a less serious sinA venial sin is a less serious sin that weakens our love for God and others and can lead to mortal sin. Ex. Lying

7 Works of Mercy Corporal Works of Mercy The Corporal Works of Mercy are ways the Church takes care of people’s basic physical needs Spiritual Works of Mercy basic spiritual needs The Spiritual Works of Mercy are loving actions that describe how to respond to people’s basic spiritual needs

8 Works of Mercy Corporal Works of Mercy 1.Feed the Hungry 2.Give drink to the thirsty 3.Give clothing to the poor 4.Visit those in prison 5.Shelter the homeless 6.Visit the sick 7.Bury the dead Spiritual Works of Mercy 1.Help others do what is right 2.Teach the ignorant 3.Give advice to the doubtful 4.Comfort those who suffer 5.Be patient with others 6.Forgive injuries 7.Pray for the living and the dead
