2 Education Terminology High School Diploma – Earned by completing the basic high school graduation requirements (i.e. Civics and Economics). GED – General Equivalency Diploma – Earned by adults who never finished high school. Generally earned through night classes. Admissions – The first step in getting into college. All applications are reviewed and processed by the Admissions Department.

5 Educational Terms Cont. Associates Degree – Earned by completing a two year college program. – Generally two kinds – Either you are using a Community College to get into a four year school or this can represent a certification in a trade skill. Bachelor Degree – Basic four year college degree. Can be any of a wide range of possible specializations.

7 Educational Terms Cont. Masters Degree – Generally a two year degree earned AFTER the undergraduate degree. Much more difficult and self-directed. Doctorates – Another two years on top of the Masters degree. Generally self directed. In order to complete a candidate must complete a Doctoral Dissertation. Entitles an earner to the Dr. surname.

9 Goal Setting Activity Take a few minutes and answer the following questions: – What is a goal I want to accomplish today? – What is a goal I want to accomplish this school year? – Where do I see myself in 5 years? Next create a short plan describing how you will obtain your 5 year goal.
