1 The Russian Anthem On January 1, 2001, Russia's new president Vladimir Putin, decided to give the Russian people a new anthem, since a common complaint was not having words to their current anthem. So Putin adopted the old anthem from the Soviet Union, identifying with the country's past. New words, however, to replace the Communist-style words, were written by Sergei Vladimirovich Mikhalkov (the same person who wrote the lyrics to the old Soviet anthem!) to go with the existing music.

2 The Russian Anthem

CHORUS Praised be the Fatherland, cherishing home of ours - Cent'ries-old union of peoples in free, Popular wisdom given us by forefathers. Praised be our country! And we're proud of thee!
