3 The Bologna Accord at Nova3 Former organization of Higher Education Licenciatura : “long” first cycle programmes (4-5 years) Master programmes: 2 years Doctorate: usually not integrated in formal teaching programmes

4 The Bologna Accord at Nova4 Steps taken by the Portuguese government February/2005: law creating in Portugal the instruments for the European Area of Higher Education August/2005: law establishing new principles for the Portuguese Higher Education System, on the basis of the Bologna Accord March/2006: law regulating the new framework of degrees and diplomas.

5 The Bologna Accord at Nova5 Steps taken by Nova 1.Definition of a general policy for applying Bologna (2005) 2.Rules for setting up the instruments for the creation of the European Higher Education Area (2005) 3.The creation of the Bologna Office (2005) 4.The reorganization of the programmes according to the Bologna Accord (2006-)

6 The Bologna Accord at Nova6 First step: principles for applying Bologna Three-cycle structure for the programmes existing at Nova (3+2+3) Every School belonging to the University shall approve a strategic development plan for the next years. The Bologna Process in each School will conform to this strategy.

7 The Bologna Accord at Nova7 Strategy for applying the Bologna Accord Improving the quality of our programmes – not a simple cosmetic operation Reorganization of the 1 st and 2 nd cycles based on five main guiding principles: –Coherence and integration of the programmes –Employability –Increasing the average qualifications by year of education –Internationalization –Cross-disciplinary approach

8 The Bologna Accord at Nova8 Second step Creating the infrastructure for participating in the European Higher Education Area –ECTS credit system –Diploma Supplement –Course Catalogue –ECTS grading scale –Learning Agreement –Transcript of Records

9 The Bologna Accord at Nova9 Third step: organizational change The creation of the Bologna Office ( Gabinete de Bolonha ) –To disseminate information regarding the Bologna Accord. –To promote technical support to the work teams at the level of the different Schools in our University. –To promote the introduction of ECTS credit system and the Diploma Supplement. –To promote the accurate application of the curricula reforms.

10 The Bologna Accord at Nova10 Where does Nova stand in this process? All 1 st cycle programmes have been integrated in the new system with the exception of Law and Medicine –Three years (180 ECTS credits) – most programmes –Five years (3+2 years: 300 credits) – for some Engineering programmes Many 2 nd cycle programmes also meet the new requirements. This process will be completed throughout the next academic year.
