1 Wrestling History Wrestling dates back to early days in ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman societies. Some form of wrestling has occurred at every modern Olympic Games, except for Paris 1900. Greco-Roman wrestling has been on every Olympic program except Paris, France(1900) and St Louis, America(1904). Freestyle wrestling made its Olympic presentation in St Louis and since then, freestyle wrestling has only missed being an Olympic sport in Stockholm, Sweden in 1912. Women competed in wrestling for the first time at the 2004 Athens Olympics, in four freestyle weight categories - 48kg, 55kg, 63 kg and 72kg.

2 Styles of wrestling  Greco-Roman wrestling allows competitors to use their arms to “attack” the upper bodies of their opponents, but they are NOT allowed to use their legs to attack their opponent.  Freestyle wrestling allows competitors to use their arms and legs to perform holds on the whole body of their opponents. A wrestling bout is made up of two three-minute periods, with a 30 second break. Wrestlers are awarded points from officials for technical movements against their opponent. 5 How to Score a Wrestling Match  Basic Vocabulary Match: A match is made up of three periods. Each period is two minutes in length.  Fall: Also called a pin occurs when any part of both shoulders of either wrestler touches the mat for a period of at least two seconds.  Near Fall: When a wrestler has control of his opponent and a fall is going to happen.  Takedown: Each wrestler is awarded two points for each takedown he achieves. A takedown occurs when a wrestler takes his opponent down to the mat with control.  Escape: One point is awarded to the wrestler who comes out from a down position.  Reversal: Coming out from underneath the opponent and controlling him in one continuous move.  Technical Fall: When a wrestler gains an advantage of 15 or more points than his opponent, the match is stopped and he is awarded a technical fall.

6 WRESTLERS CLOTHING WRESTLERS CLOTHING WRESTLING SINGLETS  The singlet needs the sponsors name.  The singlets can come in two lengths : - either covering the thigh and stopping above the knee, - or down to the ankle, entirely covering the leg, like tights or leggings. Colours Colours  The singlet must be only red for one of the wrestlers and blue for the other. EAR PROTECTORS  The ear protectors must be made of flexible and elastic material without any hard buckle. SHOES  The wrestling shoes can be made of several pieces of fabric or leather.
