1 Captain James Cook By Hannah Peirce

2 Before Captain James Cook was an explorer
James Cook was born on October 27th 1728 in Britain. He is the son of Scottish Farmhand and had seven brothers and sisters in his family. When he was a teenager James helped farming until age 16. At age 17 James Cook joined the Merchant Navy. After 10 years in the Merchant navy he joined the Royal Navy.

3 First Voyage Captain James Cook’s first voyage began in August, 1768 and he returned in July The main purpose of his first voyage was to learn more about the planet Venus when it passed between the Earth and the Sun. Captain Cook sailed to New Zealand. Cook was the first British man to step foot on New Zealand. He also made it to Australia.

4 Second Voyage Captain James Cook’s second voyage was from James Cook sailed to Antarctica and explored the Easter Islands. He was the first person to cross the Arctic Circle. He explored further than any European had explored.

5 Third Voyage Captain James Cook’s third voyage was from James was searching for a North West Passage. On his way to Alaska he discovered some Islands on Christmas Day. He named them Christmas Islands. He then sailed South to the Sandwich Islands. We now know these Islands as Hawaii. When Cook left Hawaii there was a storm that broke his mast so Cook had to return to Hawaii. When he got there he got in a fight with the Hawaiian King. In the fight Cook was killed.

7 Cook’s Ships The ship that James Cook sailed on his first voyage was the Endeavour. It was his most famous ship. He sailed around the world on that boat. On his second voyage he sailed in the Resolution. He sailed the Resolution again on his third voyage.

8 Captain Cook’s Family Captain Cook was married to Elizabeth Batts.
He had 1 daughter and 5 sons. Two of his children died at age one.

9 Fun Facts He died on Valentines Day
Cooks first time out at sea was on a boat called Freelove After James Cook’s first voyage the Endeavor ended her day’s at Newport, Rhode Island, USA He had a University named after him Cook was the first person to stop his crew from getting scurvy by making sure the crew had fresh fruit and vegetables.
