July 1918 in Qunu, TranskeiQunu, Transkei  His father Henry Mgdala Mandela is an deputy leader of the Thembulands  After the death of his father he becomes a leader of election district  After his school qualifications he goes to university of Fort Hare to become lawyer  He is a member in the council of students  In 1940 he take part in a protest campaign and as consequence he is banished from the university  In 1942 he becomes a member of the African National Congress (ANC)ANC

Biographie  1944 he helps to found the ANCYL (the youth league of the ANC)ANCYL  1948 he is ANCYL member (ANC youth league)  In 1950 Nelson becomes ANCYL President  In 1952 he becomes ANC Transvaal President and National Vice-president  1952 he founds the first black lawyer’s office with his partner Oliver TamboOliver Tambo  Nelson Mandela realizes that the way of the Apartheid regime isn’t a way of law and fairness, thus he becomes an enemy of the regime  He is accused in the famous trial of the south African government against the ANC

Biographie  After the Sharpville Massacre in 1960 the ANC is banished as an political party Nelson Mandela is in prison until 1961Sharpville Massacre  After his release from prison he leads the Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), which is the military branch of the ANC Umkhonto we Sizwe  In 1962 he leaves the country to start a military training in Angola  In Angola he leads the training of other MK members  On his return he is arrested  After his first charge he has to stay 5 five years in prison, but after the Rivonia trial he gets life imprisonmentRivonia trial

Biographie  In 1964 are nearly the whole leading figures of the ANC condemn to life imprisonment  First prison: Robben Island, characterize by inhumane, callous and brutal treatment  Second prison: Pollsmor (in 1982) means the way back to life and first visitors  Third “prison” in the near of Paarl in 1988: Nelson can leave his house, he has a few rooms and he often has guests  Frederik de Klerk becomes the first chairman of the national party and president at the 20.9.1989 Frederik de Klerk

Biographie  He prompts that Nelson Mandela is released from prison at the 11.2.1990  After his release he makes his historical speech  All the other ANC members are released, too and the banishment from the ANC is abolished  In 1991 he becomes ANC President  In 1993 Nelson Mandela and Frederik de Klerk get the Peace Nobel Prize  In 1994 the first democratically elections take place, where all south Africans can take part  In 1994 Nelson Mandela becomes president of the Republic of south Africa

Biographie  Mandela leads the reorganization of the state and the society away from Apartheid und the minority government  he fights for the national and international reconciliation:  Government of National Unity (GNU) Government of National Unity (GNU)  Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC)  In 1999 he resigns from his office as president  After his resign he works as lawyer for several humane rights organisations  He gets several honours (par example Order of St. John and Presidential Medal of Freedom)
