2  Daniel Hale Williams was an African- American physician.  Was the first African-American Cardiologists  He was the founder of Provident Hospital in Chicago (the first non segregated hospital in the United States).  Williams was also the first to perform heart surgery and open the chest cavity.

3  Daniel was born on January 18 th 1858.  He was born and raised in the city of Hollidaysburg, PA.  Williams live with father, who was a free negro barber, his mother, brother, and five sisters.  He married in 1898 to Alice Johnson.

4  Williams went to college at the Chicago Medical.  He graduated in 1883.  His field was Cardiology.  From there, he served as a surgeon for the south side dispensary (1884-1892).  During that time he was also a physician for the Protestant Orphan Asylum (1884-1893).

5  Daniel founded the first interracial hospital in 1891.  He provided training for black interns.  He was a surgeon at Provident (1892-1893, 1898-1912)  Was also a surgeon at Chief Of Freedmen's Hospital in Washington D.C. (1894-1898)

6  He established a school for black nurses in Washington D.C.  He performed his first open heart surgery at Provident Hospital on July 10 th, 1893.  He had to open a chest cavity.

7  Daniel Hale Williams died on August 4 th, 1931.  The cause of his death was from a stroke.  His wife,Alice Johnson, died in 1924.

8  Daniel contributed in many ways.  He helped other African-Americans receive there education by opening schools and providing training.  He also helped influence other African- American doctors, and scientists, telling them even though they were colored they could do anything.
