12 Bringing business and schools together to help young people succeed Scheme steps 1.Complete CRB and return to THEBP. 2. Scheme introduction meeting at school: meet the students and tour building (max 1 hr) 3. You must receive an email from THEBP saying that we have received your CRB form and confirming you can start mentoring before you start individual sessions.

14 Bringing business and schools together to help young people succeed Listening and Talking Discuss: What will increase students’ confidence in speaking with you? Interruptions. How do you get a shy student to talk? How do you manage who is talking within a group of students? How will you handle mistakes/correcting?

15 Bringing business and schools together to help young people succeed Ending the Relationship Make students aware that your next session is the final one. Ask what they want to focus on in last session. Tell them what you have learnt from them and how you have benefitted. Acceptable to give good luck card and keep in touch. Now outside of the scheme remit so no ongoing support.

17 Bringing business and schools together to help young people succeed First Individual Session Refer to mentor handbook p.12 - 14 Key aims: Why you volunteered Things in common Icebreakers in English or MFL Ground rules Assess level of fluency of student(s)

18 Bringing business and schools together to help young people succeed GCSE Syllabus See p. 15 - 19 of mentor’s handbook. Reading (20%) and listening (20%) exams at end of the first GCSE year, then writing (30%) and oral (30%) exams in final GCSE year. For some exam boards, topics are split between these competencies. Main focus of oral exams are general conversation questions, role plays, and short presentations aided by a resource.

Discuss topics in English which students have expressed interest in finding out about, eg, cultural aspects, jobs available for MFL speakers. Use Google, GCSE Bitesize.
