Silent Discussion: Directions You will be given a writing prompt. Write a paragraph in response to the writing prompt. The prompt will ask for your personal opinion. Back it up with evidence, either from your life, or from the book. Move one desk in front of you and read the response of that student. Respond to that student’s paragraph in writing. Move one more desk in front of you and read both responses on the page. Respond again in writing. Repeat once more. Repeat the process with a new writing prompt.

Prompt 1 Put the story of “The Yellow Wallpaper” in your own words. What is the plot, and what does it mean? What is the main message of the story, and do you agree with it?

Prompt 2 What do you think caused the narrator’s nervous breakdown? Do you think she really went insane? Why or why not?

Prompt 3 Charlotte Perkins Gilman said that she wrote the story “to save people from being driven crazy.” Who is she trying to save? From what is she trying to save them? Do you think this is necessary?

Prompt 4 “The Yellow Wallpaper” is considered a feminist text. What elements of feminist literature do you see in it?
