No one is good but One, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments." 18 He said to Him, "Which ones?" Jesus said, "'You shall not murder,' 'You shall not commit adultery,' 'You shall not steal,' 'You shall not bear false witness,'

5. 19 'Honor your father and your mother,' and, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' " 20 The young man said to Him, "All these things I have kept from my youth. What do I still lack?" 21 Jesus said to him, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me." 22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

The Young Man’s First Question and the Lord’s Answer 16-17… “ 16 Now behold, one came and said to Him, "Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?" 17 So He said to him, "Why do you call Me good? 9. Recognized the source of eternal life. Jesus had words of eternal life John 6:68 John 6:68… “But Simon Peter answered Him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. Jesus was good — was God. v. 17… “ 17 So He said to him, "Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God.

10. Recognized the conditionality of eternal life. Knew he had to do something. If nothing — universal salvation or God is partial.

11. Recognized the nature of eternal life. An inheritance Mark. 10:17 Mark. 10:17… “ 16 Now behold, one came and said to Him, "Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?" 1 Peter. 1:4 1 Peter. 1:4… to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, In the world to come. 13. The Young Man’s Second Question and the Lord’s Answer… vv. 18-19… 18 He said to Him, "Which ones?" Jesus said, "'You shall not murder,' 'You shall not commit adultery,' 'You shall not steal,' 'You shall not bear false witness,' Mt 19:19 'Honor your father and your mother,' and, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.'"

14. Cannot have eternal life without these. Must repent and be forgiven if have not kept these.

15. The Young Man’s Third Question and the Lord’s Answer vv. 20-21… 20 The young man said to Him, "All these things I have kept from my youth. What do I still lack?" 21 Jesus said to him, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me."

16. Had kept these important commands from youth. Yet, he knew he still needed something. Lord’s final answer v. 21 Lord’s final answer v. 21… 21 Jesus said to him, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me." Given out of love. Mark. 10:21… “Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, "One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me."

17. The rich young man Knew his heart and potential. The rich young man Knew he could not keep wealth and follow Jesus Matthew 19:23-24… Then Jesus said to His disciples, "Assuredly, I say to you that it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven."And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

18. The Young Man’s Final Sad Response… 22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. Unwilling to pay cost of discipleship. Luke 14:33… "So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.

19. Cost may differ with different people. Sinful or hindering possessions Sinful or hindering occupations. Sinful or hindering recreations. Sinful or hindering relationships.

20. Polygamy ; homosexual; living together. Unlawful marriages. Matt. 14:4…Because John had said to him, "It is not lawful for you to have her." Ezra 10:3…"Now therefore, let us make a covenant with our God to put away all these wives and those who have been born to them, according to the advice of my master and of those who tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law. Legitimate relationships.

21. Must want eternal reward more temporal cost. Mark 10:29,30… So Jesus answered and said, "Assuredly, I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or father or mother or wife or children or lands, for My sake and the gospel's, "who shall not receive a hundredfold now in this time--houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, with persecutions--and in the age to come, eternal life.

22. What would you be willing to do to have eternal life? What would you be willing to give up to have eternal life?
