Section One Introduction to First John; Gnostics and Gnosticism; “The Way to Victory” 1 John 1:1-4 1

The Author: Not named, but obviously it was John the Apostle From early times, John the Apostle was considered the writer Not all scholars agree John wrote five books of the Bible The language and outlook are very similar to the gospel of John Some think it was written about 90 A.D.; others think it was written prior to the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. 2

From Galilee – probably Bethsaida (John 1:44, home of Peter and Andrew and maybe John and James) Partners with Peter and Andrew (Luke 5:10) John and James were brothers (Matt.4:21) His father’s name was Zebedee (Matt.4:21); mother was Salome A commercial fisherman His family had some material means – a boat, nets, house, servants, etc. (Mark 1:20) 5

One of the first chosen by Jesus (Luke 5:10) Jesus named him and his brother, “Sons of Thunder” (Mark 3:17) John and Peter are the two names most mentioned among the apostles Peter, James and John were at the meeting on circumcision (Gal. 2:9) Jesus loved him and asked him from the cross to care for His mother (John 19:26,27) In later years, he was on the isle of Patmos (Rev. 1:10) 6

The Book: Written to believers Written to combat the false teaching of gnostics They denied that Jesus was God in the flesh This denial was based on a theory that all physical things, including fleshly bodies, are inherently evil and totally incompatible with anything good. Written that “you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. And these things we write to you that your joy may be full” (vs.3,4) 7

The Book: Many fundamental beliefs of Christians were rejected by gnostics, such as: 1.The creation of the physical world by God. Some inferior power must have been responsible for the physical creation. 2.The indwelling of Christ in a physical body. His flesh and blood were real. 3.The atonement for man’s sins by the sacrifice of a physical body on the cross. 4.The resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. 8

Concerning the point about the sacrifice on the cross Docetism (a form of gnosticism) differentiated between Christ (as a spirit) and Jesus (as a fleshly man). It was claimed that Christ (spirit) descended upon Jesus as a dove at His baptism and left Him at the cross before His crucifixion. Concerning the point about the resurrection Gnostics thought that the ultimate goal of the spirit is to be freed from the physical body, not to be reunited with another (spiritual) body. 9

“…these things we write to you that your joy may be full.” (1Jn 1:4) “…these things I write to you, that you may not sin.” (1Jn 2:1) “These things I have written to you… that you may know that you have eternal life…” (1Jn 5:13) “These things I have written to you… that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.” (1Jn 5:13) “These things I have written to you concerning those who try to deceive you.” (1Jn 2:26) 10

Some of the “intellectually elite” had been attracted by this error and had deserted the faith of the gospel (I John 2:18,19) The gnostics doctrine seemed to conform better to much of the “modern thinking” of the day. The Jews continued to reject the true identity of Jesus because of their religious prejudices, and The Greeks rejected any possibility of His true identity because of their mindset of rationality over faith. (See 1Corinthians 1:23.) 11

Christians of John’s day were beset with assaults upon the deity of Jesus from all three groups. This epistle was evidently written to comfort faithful saints in their efforts to remain steadfast in the basic truths of the gospel that were denied by gnostics and other unbelievers. 12

Gnostic Teaching Gospel Doctrine “Jesus” and “Christ” were different “Jesus” and “Christ” were named personstogether--vs.3 Jesus was just an “extraordinary human” Jesus was “in the beginning” before humans--vs.1 Jesus’ body was not real - a ”phantom” Jesus’ body was subject to three senses--vs.1 Incarnation impossible - Christ only a spirit Christ (eternal) was “manifested” as “Jesus”--vs.2 Resurrection impossible - spirit’s goal is Resurrection a reality - the body was freedom from the fleshly body seen and handled by witnesses-- vs.1 (See John 20:25,27; Luke 24:39,40.) (Taken from chart on page 3) 13

The theme of First John could be considered as “Victory in Christ” “And this is the promise that He has promised us—eternal life.” (1Jn 2:25) “Victory” is winning, conquering, being successful, being triumphant 14

Section 1-- 1:1-4 The Way to Victory-- “From Heaven to Earth and Back Again” Section 2-- 1:5 - 2:11 Victory Over the Practice of Sin Section 3-- 2:12-27 Victory Over Satan and His Angels Section 4-- 2:28 - 4:6 Victory Through Righteousness Section 5-- 4:7 - 5:3 Victory Through Love Section 6-- 5:4-21 Victory Through Faith [These themes are interwoven throughout the book] 15

The Way to Victory (Salvation)– (1) The Word was in the beginning; (2) The Word had eternal life in Himself; (3) The Word and His life were manifested to the world; (4) The Word was resurrected; (5) The apostles witnessed these facts; (6) They declared the facts to men; (7) Acceptance of these truths brings fellowship (salvation); (8) Fellowship gives full joy now and hereafter. 22

1. Study carefully the “preambles” John wrote to First John (1:1-4) and the Gospel of John (1:1-5). What similarities do you observe? a)The time reference that proves Christ’s eternity: _______________________________________ b)The name used to identify Christ: _______________________________________ c)The Person associated with Christ in eternity: _______________________________________ d)The names of the Person associated with Christ in eternity: 1)__________________________ 2)__________________________ e)The thing most closely linked to Christ: ________________________________________ f)The thing/Person revealed to men: ________________________________________ 23

2. What are some differences in these two passages? What is the “chain” of fellowship that comes through accepting the apostles’ testimony about the nature of Jesus? (vs.3) 25
