12 No.12 IMAGINE Final Conference, Budapest, 25 October 2006 Modelling requirements FEATURE / PROPERTYCOMMENTS RELIEF Breaking linesTop and foot of embankments, shoulders, verges, transition from road/railway infrastructures to natural terrain, hill tops… are more important than smooth terrain shapes or regular slopes. It the DTM has an accuracy < 1m everywhere, explicit breaking lines are not necessary. Digital terrain model: height lines, points, interpolated surface, TIN,…

As a rougher estimate, the projection of the building’s roof on the ground can be used. UsageThe usage of the building is an essential parameter for the estimation of exposed populations. It is recommended to differentiate at least three usage classes, possibly with sub-classes: dwellings (houses and apartments), sensitive buildings (schools, hospitals, homes,…) and other buildings (industrial, commercial,…) Number of floorsThe number of floors is more important to the estimation of exposed populations than the total height of the building to the determination of noise levels. Total height of the building Height per floor Altitude of base contourIf known, altitude information at the base contour of buildings can be used to refine the DTM. Roof shapesRealistic roof shapes instead of a single flat roof polygon.

14 No.14 IMAGINE Final Conference, Budapest, 25 October 2006 Modelling requirements GROUND SURFACES Overall characterisationThe whole area under study is characterised by a single impedance class : hard, mixed or soft The area under study is divided in smaller parts and each is assigned a single impedance class: hard, mixed or soft Hard surfacesIf the site is classified as globally soft or mixed, hard surfaces representing parking lots, large water surfaces,… should be added locally (if > 100m²). Soft surfacesIf the site is classified as globally hard or mixed, soft surfaces representing parks, gardens, grassland,… should be added locally (if > 100 m²). Detailed surface modelCoverage of the area using all possible impedance classes. Surfaces should be aggregated in areas > 100 m²
