Surface Water Systems L.E.Q. What are the characteristics of the different fresh water systems?

Fresh Water Systems  River Systems  Watersheds  Ponds  Lakes  Wetlands

Review: River Systems  Starts as run-off from mountains which forms small streams and creeks (tributaries)‏  Small streams and creeks flow into a larger river and then to a drainage basin, known as a watershed

Watersheds  Land area that supplies water to a river system  Watersheds are usually separated by an area of higher elevation –Rocky Mtns. are known as the great divide.

Questions  Answer the following questions in complete sentences in your notebook. These and the following questions will be your test grade for this unit. 1. What is a watershed? 2. What divides watersheds?

Ponds  Forms when water collects in low-lying land areas.  Ponds are shallow –Allows light to reach the bottom –Allows for plant life and algae to grow at the bottom. –Can dry up during the dry season…Do not have to exist year round!

Questions  Answer the following questions in complete sentences in your notebook. These and the following questions will be your test grade for this unit. 3. How do ponds form? 4. What are three characteristics of ponds?

Lakes  Formation –Form in low lying areas –Form when Earth’s crust is separating –Form from damming a river.  How are lakes different than ponds? –Lakes are generally larger and deeper. –Light can not reach the bottom of a lake  No plant life or algae in a lake’s depths.

Questions  Answer the following questions in complete sentences in your notebook. These and the following questions will be your test grade for this unit. 5. How do lakes form? 6. How are lakes different than ponds?

Wetlands  Land area covered with water.  Freshwater wetlands –Bogs  Common in cool northern areas  Tend to be acidic waters low in nitrogen (carniverous plants)‏ –Marsh  Grassy area covered by streams or shallow water. –Swamp  Located in warm, humid climates  Looks like forest under water!  IMPORTANT: HELPS CONTROL FLOODS!

Questions  Answer the following questions in complete sentences in your notebook. These and the following questions will be your test grade for this unit. 7. What are wetlands? 8. What are three types of wetlands?

Final Questions  Answer the following questions in complete sentences in your notebook. These and the following questions will be your test grade for this unit. 1. Name and describe the five types of fresh water systems we talked about. 2. Describe the three different types of wetlands.

What's Next?: Ocean Systems  Continental Shelf –Intertidal Zone  Continental Slope –Neritic Zone  Abyssal Plain –Open Ocean
