OVERVIEW of the SYNOPTIC GOSPELS Mark’s Gospel Mr. Perrotti Freshmen Religion Chapter 6 –Lesson 3/Part A

The Synoptic Gospels Mark – Written 65 AD Matthew – Written 73-75 AD Luke – Written 73-75 AD

MARK The Second Gospel in the New Testament deals chiefly with the Galilean ministry of Christ, and the events of the last week in Jerusalem. Beginning with the public ministry Mark’s Gospel does not include a Birth Narrative. He is much more concerned with Christ's acts

Christ’s Acts in Mark’s Gospel The miracles are narrated most graphically and thrown into great prominence. – Almost a fourth of the entire Gospel being devoted to them – There seems to be a desire to impress the readers from the outset with Christ's almighty power and dominion over all nature.

Mark and the Parables Of the parables Mark has only four: – The sower and the seed – The seed growing secretly – The mustard seed – The wicked husbandman Remember a Parable is a simple story with a message which can last the test of time. Jesus used Parables in all of his teachings.

Mark as an Outline The repeated notes of time and place seem to show that the Mark meant to arrange in chronological order at least a number of the events which he records. His Gospel was written in outline form and as we discussed, used by Matthew and Luke to arrange their Gospels.

Authorship Written by St. Mark, a disciple of Paul and Peter. It is believed that Peter was a main source for Mark’s Gospel, and wrote down the accounts as he and Paul were told. Written during a time of the Christian Percussions. It was the shortest Gospel, written in a hurry for those “Suffering Christians”

Why is the Gospel of Mark important, in early Christianity? It's really the Gospel that establishes... the life of Jesus as a story form. Mark retells the story of Jesus Mark tells the story by thinking about the death and letting all the events that led up to that death move toward it and through it. – So, it's the death of Jesus that's the guiding principle to Mark's gospel, not the life.... – It's important that he show’s Christ as our”Suffering Servant”

MARK'S MESSIAH One of the main issues in Mark's way of presenting Jesus is what it means for Jesus to be the Messiah. – Jesus in Mark’s Gospel even asks "who do you think I am?” – They answer – "you're the Messiah.“ But as we know, they truly did not know what that meant as in the end most of his disciples ran and hid.

DEATH OF JESUS IN MARK Mark's gospel is also the first one that really tells us the passion narrative in as much detail. – And the way Mark tells the tells the story of the death of Jesus... is to see him as a lonely figure who goes to his death abandoned by all of his followers and supporters – Jesus from the cross says..., "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me"? The Jesus of Mark's gospel is a lonely figure, at times, waiting for the vindication of God. This is important as his audience is being persecuted for their faith. He needs to show them that Christ was also persecuted for he was!

Overview “The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God” intro to Mark’s Gospel! – “Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way, 3 the voice of one crying in the wilderness: 'Prepare [3] the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,’” – From the beginning of his Gospel –He show’s Jesus as the Messiah and fulfills Isaiah’s Prophecy.

Overview Shortest Gospel Written in 65 AD for the Christians being persecuted by Rome. A narrative of the Ministry of Christ from the perspective of his passion, death and resurrection. Showed Jesus as “The Suffering Servant”, “Son of God”
