What is Different about DFYM? Top-Down Approach vs. Ground-Up Approach

Discipleship Group Norms ●4-6 youth (gender based) ●two adults (also same gender) - leader/co-leader ●groups exist independently ●encouraged to be in community with other groups ●meet regularly (typically weekly) ●in addition to own goals, commitment to parish goals ●mission oriented

Oversight & Accountability? Do What You Want Over Controlled Freedom

Some Observations So Far ●youth and adults will go where they are fed ●strong leadership is essential (vision, focus, trust) ●the faithful are looking for the freedom to give of themselves ●groups should be formed naturally from the ground up ●focus intensity on one step at a time (maintain others) ●be ok starting small and set the standards high ●support from the top is essential

The Great Commission “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, to the close of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20

Starting a Small Group (Ideally) (Note: the ideal takes a lot of work and time) Small Groups Should Start & Evolve Naturally ●youth should feel invited based on a personal connection to leader or peer ●it should be their decision to join and say yes to a group ●rooted in their own desire Starting From Scratch ●start with youth you are already connected to ●seek youth out through parish events and opportunities ●work with parish coordinator (get a good start plan and knowledge of vision)

Best Practices ●work under the direction and oversight of the parish (coordinator & pastor) ●plan and communicate consistently and give all details ●document situations that may need to be recounted ●ask before making a decision or announcing anything ●strive for the ideal ●do not be afraid to say no in situations where you are uncomfortable o freedom in saying YES and freedom in saying NO
