Early years George Vancouver was born in King's Lynn, Norfolk, England on the 22nd June His parents were John Jasper Vancouver and Bridget Berners. George Vancouver’s first job was as a naval service midshipman aboard HMS Resolution, on James Cook's second voyage, searching for Terra Australis. He also went on Cook's third voyage. Upon his return to Britain in 1779, Vancouver was commissioned as a lieutenant and posted aboard the sloop Martin surveying coastlines.

Timeline

Discoveries George Vancouver left England in April 1791 with two ships and headed towards the Pacific Ocean. The expedition went to Cape Town, Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, and China, collecting samples and surveying coastlines along the way. Going to North America, George Vancouver followed the coasts of Oregon and Washington northward. In April he met American Captain Robert Gray off the coast of Oregon who just about to sail up the Columbia River.

Later Years George Vancouver faced difficulties when he returned home to England. Thomas Pitt attacked Vancouver in the press. However, Pitt took a more direct role; on 29 August 1796 he sent Vancouver a letter heaping lots of insults on the head of his former captain, and challenged him to a duel. Vancouver gravely replied that he was unable to do so and offered instead to submit to formal examination by flag officers . Pitt chose instead to stalk Vancouver, and assaulted him on a London street corner. Nothing stopped Vancouver's civilian brother Charles from interposing and giving Pitt blow after blow until onlookers restrained the attacker. Even with his naval service, George Vancouver died. Captain George Vancouver, one of Britain's greatest explorers and navigators, died in obscurity on 10 May 1798 at the age of 40 in Surrey England.

Who was pitt? Thomas Pitt was a noble man who didn’t like Vancouver because he punished him. On 13 March 1791, Pitt came aboard HMS Discovery to take part in the Vancouver Expedition of diplomacy and exploration. All officer berths having been filled, he (Pitt) signed on as an able seaman. When the expedition reached Tahiti, Pitt was punished for trying to trade a piece of broken barrel-hoop for the romantic favours of an island woman. Vancouver gave strict orders against romancing the natives, since such escapades had played a major role in the Munity on the Bounty; in addition, any captain was required to punish pilferage. Pitt was flogged again for unauthorized trade with Indians at Port Stewart and then again for breaking glass while fighting with another gentleman. Finally he was placed in irons for being found sleeping on watch, and served this sentence with common seamen.
