The RSLP Collection Level Description framework, SQL, and the SCONE project Gordon Dunsire Research and Projects Manager Napier University, Edinburgh

SCONE Domain is geographical (Scotland) –Collections range from general to specific –Not bound by subject, sector or format –Uses CAIRNS Z39.50 clump infrastructure Dynamic clumping –Selection by subject (RCO), location, name and format –Z39.50 server technical information –Indexes, redirection, explain and help

WhySQL? Extensibility –Add CAIRNS Z39.50 information –RCO thesaurus structure; SLIR directory –Structure and detail required for dynamic clumping; e.g. town of location Off-the-shelf tools –MS Access [MySQL, Sybase] –Cold Fusion (free server) [ASP, JSP] –NetSkills

Implementation Search input via HTML form Processed by Cold Fusion server Results displayed as HTML Works on 2+ levels –Selection of collections (dynamic clumping) –Selection of one-stop, single interface Z39.50 broadcast search –Local update of central CLD record –Potential for portal interface

Collection granularity Catalogues and collections not co-extensive –e.g. Edward Clark Collection (intellectual) < Merchiston campus collection (physical) < Napier University LIS collection (organisational) = Catalogue Catalogue variants –e.g. Z target (Bath profile) < WebPAC < TelnetPAC 100+ CLDs for 14 CAIRNS members

Recursive selection algorithm? Identify collection CLD –Has metadata CLD? E.g. catalogue, finding aid If no - has higher collection CLD? –If no - terminate (describe collection) –If yes - loop If yes - has higher metadata CLD? E.g. clump –If no - terminate (access metadata) –If yes - loop Can be implemented in Cold Fusion
