UNIT GOALS Choosing the level of Critical Thinking Book pgs. 14 - 16

Unit Goals: A Summary Unit Goals articulate what ALL students will know and be able to do at the end of a 2-4 week unit They do so by stating the level of critical thinking, or the level at which students will engage with the Unit Concept Unit Goals: Incorporate standards that require 2-4 weeks to accomplish Focus on content and skills Assessed independently and individually on previously unseen material

Unit Goals: The Big Picture Standards that can be accomplished in a lesson plan Standards that take 2-4 weeks to accomplish Standards that take more than 1 unit to accomplish Standards that take more than 1 year to accomplish Team/Dept. Outcomes Course Outcomes Unit Goal LP

Unit Goals: Components 8-10 (or 4-6) Unit Goals – one for each Unit Concept The stem “SWBAT” (students will be able to) Each uses one verb from Bloom’s Taxonomy Verb must be: Active Observable Challenging & Developmentally Appropriate Constitutes a “floor” not a “ceiling” of student achievement

Unit Goals: Bloom’s Taxonomy Evaluation Synthesis Analysis Application Comprehension Knowledge Bloom’s Taxonomy Bloom’s Verbs are at the heart of writing good Unit Goals.

Unit Goals: Levels of Critical Thinking Team/Dept.Critical Thinking Levels K - 2Know and “Explain” 3 - 5Explain and Apply 6 - 8 Apply and Analyze (with scaffolding) 9 -12 Analyze and perhaps Synthesize

Unit Goals: Examples 2 st Grade Math Unit Concept: Show Me the Money! Unit Goal: SWBAT find the total amount of money for different denominations of money (coin and bill). 6 th Grade Math Unit Concept: Negative Numbers Unit Goal: SWBAT order rational numbers (positive, negative, fractions) on a number line.

Unit Goals: Your Turn 5 th Grade Math Unit Concept: Data Analysis Unit Goal: SWBAT identify data by using informational graphs, statistics, and probability. Strengths: Student-centered, clearly written, active. Weaknesses: Not challenging for a 5 th grade student. Possible Alternative: SWBAT use informational graphs and probability to describe trends in a data set.

Unit Goals: Your Turn 8 th Grade Pre-Algebra Unit Concept: Basics of Geometry Unit Goal: SWBAT list, identify, and apply basic properties of lines, angles, planes, and polygons. Strengths: Student-centered, clearly written, active verb, challenging. Weaknesses: Too many verbs. Possible Alternative: SWBAT apply basic properties of lines, angles, planes, and polygons to solve geometric relationships.

Unit Goals: Your Turn HS Statistics Unit Concept: Normal Distribution Unit Goal: SWBAT evaluate normal and standardized normal distribution. Strengths: Student-centered, clearly worded, active. Weaknesses: Not developmentally appropriate – evaluative criteria not explained. Possible Alternative: SWBAT draw conclusions from applications of normal and standardized normal distribution.
