Reading Literacy Standards Learning Goal: –To understand college and career readiness (CCR) implications and connections to Educational Planning and Assessment System (EPAS).

Overview of EPAS Purpose of: –EXPLORE: To determine readiness for freshmen year of high school –PLAN: To predict ACT score –ACT: To predict success for freshmen year of college. Accountability: –Provide interventions for students not meeting benchmarks Science Test Format: –EXPLORE-28 items, 30 minutes –PLAN-30 items, 25 minutes –ACT-40 items, 35 minutes

Three Formats Data representation (graphs, tables, and other schematic forms) Research summaries (descriptions of one or more related experiments) Conflicting viewpoints (expressions of several related hypotheses or views that are inconsistent with one another)

Let’s Take the or Each of you will be taking ½ of the science test. K-8 Teachers will take the EXPLORE High School Teachers will take the PLAN You will have 15 minutes. Please work alone.

Examine State & National Data Examine the national and state data. Do you know where your school is with respect to national and state trends? Do you notice any trends in science? How do the science scores compare to other subjects?

What was required? Think back to the items on the test you just took. Why do students struggle with this test (besides the time factor)? In order to be successful on these items what skills, knowledge, and/or competencies would students have to have? Work with a partner and generate a list.

1 st Semester Freshman Course Load (15 hrs) 3,674 Pages of Reading 20 Quizzes 13 Formal Papers 22 Tests 2 Oral Presentations Typical Semester Typical Semester

What are the Instructional Implications? What are we doing currently to help students meet the rigor of this kind of assessment? In order to improve student performance, what types of instructional and assessment experiences do we need to provide? Previous partners, join with another pair to generate a list of recommendations.

Sample 1

How can the Literacy Standards help your students to improve on EPAS? Examine each strand in the reading standards and identify the key expectations for each strand. Compare these expectations with your earlier generated lists. If students meet these standards at the end of each grade band, would you predict that their performance would improve? Will they be more CCR?

Determining Lexile Levels www.lexile.com

So What? Now What? Using your list of recommendations, create a chart. Next examine these and decide those items that are: –Ready to do (Green dot) –Need some assistance (Yellow dot) –Need lots of assistance (Red dot)

Next Meeting Prep Bring back text example(s) that you have used or will be using with students. For each piece: –Determine the Lexile Level –Identify science standards addressed –Identify literacy standards addressed –Describe instructional plan for use

Reading Literacy Standards Learning Goal: –To understand college and career readiness (CCR) implications and connections to EPAS.

Take Home Messages The science portion of the ACT requires students to: –recognize and understand the basic features of, and concepts related to, the provided information. –examine critically the relationship between the information provided and the conclusions drawn or hypotheses developed. –generalize from given information and draw conclusions, gain new information, or make predictions. The Literacy Standards are designed to have students CCR upon graduation. By effectively implementing the Literacy Standards for Reading, students will be more prepared for the EXPLORE, PLAN, and ACT.
