1 (SI) Supplemental Instruction MSJC – MVC Results FALL 2008 Basic Skills Initiative Source: MSJC MVC Math Coordinator – Janice Levasseur Compiled: MSJC R&P Dept. – XCHAS Ext7073 - 2.10.9

2 SI Elements: Courses – historically difficult courses SI Leader – passed course with an ‘A’ – paid for attending all classes with current class – does not re-lecture – leads/facilitates discussion – shares study strategies – viewed as a peer Sessions – ‘ two’ one hour sessions per wk – planned around students Session – group participation Participant – attended at least one SI session – attendance is voluntary Source: MSJC MVC Math Coordinator – Janice Levasseur Compiled: MSJC R&P Dept. – XCHAS Ext7073 - 2.10.9

3 BSI Support Fall 2008: $10,000 MVC –Coordinator (1) – $4150 Duties include but are not limited to data collection and management, selection and training of SI Leaders, scheduling of SI sections, and marketing and meeting with faculty. –SI Leaders (3) – $1800/SIL Duties include but are not limited to attending all classes, conducting two out-of-class review sessions, and attending all on-going training meetings. –Materials - $450 (spent $446.53) Including but limited to textbooks, paper, training material, index cards, pens Source: MSJC MVC Math Coordinator – Janice Levasseur Compiled: MSJC R&P Dept. – XCHAS Ext7073 - 2.10.9

6 Source: MSJC MVC Math Coordinator – Janice Levasseur Compiled: MSJC R&P Dept. – XCHAS Ext7073 - 2.10.9 61% participation Over half (61%) of the all BSI students attended at least one SI session. 83-one hour sessions were conducted generating close to 400 contact hours Over half (61%) of the all BSI students attended at least one SI session. 83-one hour sessions were conducted generating close to 400 contact hours

7 Grade Distribution SI versus Non-SI group Math 50 – Mind Over Math Math 050 – Mind Over Math Successful completions in the SI Group (77%) exceed the Non-SI (59%). The GPA of the SI Group (3.0) was significantly higher that the GPA of the Non-SI Group (2.18). Math 050 – Mind Over Math Successful completions in the SI Group (77%) exceed the Non-SI (59%). The GPA of the SI Group (3.0) was significantly higher that the GPA of the Non-SI Group (2.18). 77% Success Rate Source: MSJC MVC Math Coordinator – Janice Levasseur Compiled: MSJC R&P Dept. – XCHAS Ext7073 - 2.10.9 32%

8 Grade Distribution SI versus Non-SI group Math 51 – Pre-Algebra Math 051 – Pre-Algebra Successful completions in the SI Group (74%) exceed the Non-SI (69%). 9 9 Grade Distribution SI versus Non-SI group Math 96 – Intermediate Algebra Math 096 – Intermediate Algebra Unlike the other classes, Math 96 saw up-side-down results. Successful completions in the Non-SI (67%) exceed the SI Group (44%). The GPA of the SI Group (1.92) was significantly lower than the GPA of the Non-SI Group (3.0). 13 Source: MSJC MVC Math Coordinator – Janice Levasseur Compiled: MSJC R&P Dept. – XCHAS Ext7073 - 2.10.9 Key Findings & Next Steps: Math 50 and Math 51 – SI effective form of academic support. Math 96 – 2nd semester of supporting with SI with up side down results (2 different instructors) Next step: BSI funds will support M96 in the Spring 2009. We are researching possible causes of the up-side-down results in order to determine if M96 will continue to be SI supported at MVC. Hypothesis – i.e. possibility due to under-prepared M90 entering M96 - “test preppers” = 1 to 4 sessions attendees Summer session SI – 4 sections SU08 with little or no success- summer students tend to be stronger academically Next step: MVC will not run SI in future summer sessions Increases success rate Selection of courses are data based driven -- BSI funded - 3 classes (math 50,51,96) as a result SI courses will be offered in other identified difficult subjects for basic skills students: history (FA’08,SP09) psychology (FA’08,SP09) Spanish (SP’09)  Spring 2009 BSI funds are supporting M51, M90, M96 SI growth sources: funding (not a replacement for tutoring) availability of SI leaders (trained & experienced) seasoned SI coordinator (trained, experienced & dedicated champion)
