6 Iambic Pentameter Much text is written in blank verse.” The verse is called blank because it allows both the speaker and the listener to anticipate rhymes when the rhythmical pattern is regular and the actor to emphasize sounds to reveal character and emotion. An iambus is a foot of two syllables, a short or unaccented syllable followed by a long or accented syllable- brief, long, brief, long. The human heart beats in iambs, that is, in two recurring strokes-brief, long, brief, and long. Correct stress will result. An example as follows;     O, what- oh what Note that the mark  indicates the short or non stress syllable; the mark  is the long or accented syllable”[1] [1] Shakespeare wrote in iambic pentameter. Iambic pentameter is five strong beats to the line and these are short long short long syllables. There are ten syllables to the line. Shakespeare did however vary from this at times. All this leads us to a discussion on timing. It is worth checking through your notes on comedy after reading this. It can be the response to an action, in which case we might perceive that the objective has been satisfactorily achieved. It can be response to an adjustment or a feeling in which case we must quickly judge what it is we believe is an adequate response. 7 Shakespeare used much poetic imagery.  Discuss how you feel when you look at these shapes.  Lets brain storm the idea of imagery.

8 OK its just a tree. Or is it? What images come to you? What is imagery?

9 Once you get to know Shakespeare you will be surprised at how easy it really is. Take a leap into his world! tp://www.freedigitalphotos.net/images/terms.php

10 Finally….. Why MUST ALL actors study Shakespeare? An actor cannot say, “I prefer not to study Shakespeare, I only like modern stuff” Peter will at some time elaborate more on this but for now Nothing stretches the actor as much as working on classic text. All acting schools expect one COMPULSORY Shakespeare speech to gain admission. Shakespeare is fundamental to acting’s tradition and there is some Shakespeare being performed ALL the time.
