1 1/25/08, GSLIS retreat 1 Two General Models for Informatics Majors “IST Informatics” Defines “informatics” to be a broader version of Computer Science that is still technically oriented, and includes information & knowledge organization and management, social informatics, human/user-centered design, policy, data content, applications, etc. Core knowledge is IST knowledge. Core careers are IST careers “Cognate-Oriented Informatics” Defines “informatics” to be the use of IST in support of some cognate discipline; IST as a method or perspective. A core of IST plus a concentration in a cognate discipline. Core knowledge is IST and Cognate knowledge. Core careers integrate IST and Cognate activities.

2 1/25/08, GSLIS retreat 2 IST Prerequisites IT Literacy/Context Programming Math/Statistics, Data Analysis Writing/Compostion
