4 + I. Why Imperialism? A. Imperialism- economic and political control over other countries B. Competition between Europeans pushed them to get control of new lands C. Industrial Revolution- more demand for raw goods, need for markets to sell goods

6 + Using the textbook, ch. 25, you will label and color your map of Imperialism in Asia.

7 + II. India (controlled by British) A. British East India Company 1. Created to control trade between GB, India, and East Asia 2. Controlled until the Sepoy Mutiny (1857)- British gov’t took over after Hindu and Muslim rebellion

8 + B. India had many people and raw goods- it was the “jewel” of the British Empire C. British wanted to westernize India using modern technology and attacking traditions D. The nationalist India National Congress sought Indian independence

9 + III. Southeast Asia A. British- Burma and Malaysia: built Singapore and dominated trade B. French- Indochina (Vietnam): used resources to benefit France C. Dutch-Indonesia: controlled most of spice trade until British took control D. Spain then United States- Philippines: America fought a war to control and to become imperialist

23 + VI. Imperialism in Africa A. Scramble for Africa (1880- 1914) 1. Disease had prevented Europeans from creating colonies 2. New medicines allowed Europeans to compete for Africa’s resources

The Zulu in South Africa won a battle against the British before eventually being defeated C. The Ethiopians successfully defeated the Italians and kept their independence
