WARM-UP #2 OCTOBER 23-24, 2013

TRANSLATING ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS

WHAT IS A MATHEMATICAL EXPRESSION?

A mathematical phrase that contains a combination of numbers, variables and operations but DOES NOT have an equal sign. Examples: “The difference of 7 and x” “The product of -9 and z” “Three more than b divided by 9” “Two-thirds of p”

WHAT IS A MATHEMATICAL EXPRESSION? A mathematical phrase that contains a combination of numbers, variables and operations but DOES NOT have an equal sign. Examples: “The difference of 7 and x” 7 - x “The product of -9 and z” -9 z (Can’t use x for multiplication) “Three more than b divided by 9” b/9 + 3 “Two-thirds of p” 2/3*p

WHAT IS A MATHEMATICAL EQUATION? A mathematical equation is a mathematical sentence WITH an equal sign. X + -7 = -21 8x – 4 = 36 Five less than the quotient of w and 9 is -27 (Is means =)

MATH VOCABULARY Walk around the room and add a synonym to the mathematical operations.

MATH VOCABULARY Complete the graphic organizer on translating expressions.

CHECK YOUR ANSWERS!

LET’S TRY SOME “TRANSLATING” Students will get a partner and sit back to back with one person facing the homework wall and one person facing the book wall. Each person should have a dry erase board, marker and eraser. Each pair should be able to see the Smart board. They should not be able to see their partners dry erase board. Each student will write down the 5 translated algebraic expressions from set 1. The pair will switch boards to be graded. Give praises or constructive criticism. Switch back and try set 2.

BEFORE WE “TRANSLATE” Let’s try a little experiment. Sit back to back. Draw a sun in the top left corner of your dry erase board. Add some waves to the bottom of the board. Draw 3 fish. Add 2 birds. Draw 1 additional object to make your picture unique. Do you think everyone will have the same picture? Check your picture with your back to back partner. Now we are ready to try to get the same expressions! Number your board from one to five.

SET #1 1.The product of 7 and a 2.The quotient of w and -9 3.6 less than q 4.3 times the sum of y and 7 5.The difference of p and 6, all divided by w squared

SET #1 - ANSWERS 1.The product of 7 and a 7a 2.The quotient of w and -9 w/-9 3.6 less than q q - 6 4.3 times the sum of y and 7 3(y+7) 5.The difference of p and 6, all divided by w squared (p-6)/w²

SET #2 1.Z decreased by 7 2.The sum of h and w squared 3.The quotient of 5 and p added to 8 4.7 divided by the product of r and - 12 5.The sum of p and the quotient of - 7 and z

SET #2 ANSWERS 1.Z decreased by 7 z - 7 2.The sum of h and w squared h + w² 3.The quotient of 5 and p added to 8 5/p + 8 4.7 divided by the product of r and -12 7 / (r*-12) 5.The sum of p and the quotient of -7 and z p + (-7/z)

EXTRA PRACTICE 1.Three more than twice a number 2.A number increased by seven, then doubled. 3.Half of the sum of x and three

EXTRA PRACTICE ANSWERS 1.Three more than twice a number 2x + 3 2. A number increased by seven, then doubled. (x + 7) * 2 3. Half of the sum of x and three ½ (x + 3)
